Alternator....power steering??!?

Hi guys,

Hope your all well and enjoying your full fat rr!

I Bought mine last year with around 102k...drove like and absolute dream!
Recently I have encountered a few issues.

Last week my car wouldn’t start after 3 days or it parked, quick call to RAC, pleasant chap Andrew arrived... jumped the battery started absolutely fine, out with the multi-meter it was diagnosed with a dead alternator Sad

Bought an original from euro car parts: this was the part I bought

When I went to collect the car from an independent garage the car started fine but there was a slight off smell emitting from the vehicle...I thought nothing of it.. Drove it for around 20miles start and stop the engine around 7 times, no problems parked it up last night.

Started the car this evening with an awful sound that I can only describe as a high-pitched wail or spine-chilling screech, which lasted 10 seconds, also accompanied was smoke underneath the body with an odour.

Now the car has absolutely no power steering and i have the warning message on the dash "charging system fault"

When serviced by Land Rover 3 months ago there was an advisory of power steering leak.

Guys any help would be much appreciated, I am based in West Yorkshire

The screeching noise will be the alternator belt slipping on one or more pulleys. This could have several causes:

– the belt tension could have been improperly adjusted;
– a battery that's low on charge will place extra demand on the alternator which makes it harder for it to turn;
– if that belt also goes round the power steering pulley you may have a problem there too.
– could be a duff bearing in the new alternator which has seized causing belt slip.

The lack of any power steering is harder (for me) to guess at. There are some very knowledgeable people on FFRR (unlike myself Rolling Eyes ) and I'm sure they'll be along soon to advise you.

In the meantime you could check your battery voltage with a multimeter and the fluid level in your power steering reservoir. 2006MY 4.2 SC

Check fluid level in the power steer reservoir a serpentine belt slipping on its own will not make smoke in the quantities you describe, you would smell it in an instance of very poor tension though.
Sounds like you have fluid leaking onto the system some place or a combination of these two problems.
Check belt tension you should barely be able to deflect it with your fingers.
The tensioner is a consumable part, it could be shot also

Is the belt fitted correctly, dont laugh it has a fairly complicated run.
There are actually two belts.

If you have sufficient fluid on the belts to make smoke as you describe I would be fitting two new ones......after the leak is fixed

That sounds like a snapped belt, I had the same problem.

I had the air con compressor changed then on the first proper drive I heard a screech, the power steering went very stiff and then the battery warning light came on. The belt had snapped Big Cry

All my cars I've had, I always keep the old belt, when changed, (still good) in a box of other goodies in the boot, and a diagram, of how its routed. ( not obvious, if it's snapped) This can be fitted, by a breakdown guy, should the worst happen, on a journey.
The breakdown guy typically wouldn't have one to hand, so, it's a very handy thing to have for a rainy day. With a few other bits, like a few bulbs and torch, 12v pump etc.

If the belt is not snapped but doesn't turn around, it could be the pulley, at your mileage. They have something like rubber buffer to work silently, and they can Break.
