Check fluid level in the power steer reservoir a serpentine belt slipping on its own will not make smoke in the quantities you describe, you would smell it in an instance of very poor tension though.

That sounds like a snapped belt, I had the same problem.

All my cars I've had, I always keep the old belt, when changed, (still good) in a box of other goodies in the boot, and a diagram, of how its routed. ( not obvious, if it's snapped) This can be fitted, by a breakdown guy, should the worst happen, on a journey.

If the belt is not snapped but doesn't turn around, it could be the pulley, at your mileage. They have something like rubber buffer to work silently, and they can Break. |
