I can honestly say that since switching from Windows to Mac I've never looked back.

I've never had any issues with my current Macbook, I think it's coming up to 3 years old now and the only reason I'm considering replacing it with a MacBook Air is due to me filling up the storage space on this one. My findings are that, generally, Macs' seem to run smoother and faster than Windows, not having to worry about getting infected with viruses is reassuring, less of what you don't need and more of what you do comes pre-installed upon purchase and finally, I know it's not a very manly comment to make, but Macs' sure are pretty.

For the above reasons, I'm happy to pay a premium over the Windows equivalent.

I've also managed to convert my sister, father and step brother into using one.

Mick - if she's asked for a macbook, she done it for a reason.

There's no need to get into a debate over which is better. They are the equal of any windows laptop. except they come in white and silver cases, are stylish,and are very fashionable right now.

If you're the type of guy who would bring home a posh pair of trainers from the high street when she specifically asked for "Nike" the get a PC.....otherwise better get the Mac especially as it's a gift......

The only reason would be because it's something different as all she has had is Microsoft Laptops and Pc's ( her recent Laptop is only a year old )

Changes her mind on a whim and i was only asking to find out about any differences as i also have only used windows ........... coz i know if she does not like the Mac ..... it will be my Fault .......... So i will just get grief from the other half .........

I worked in the IT industry before i retired and so had a lot of involvement with windows machines. A few years ago a mate persuaded me to buy a Mac and i would not go back to windows again, I have a Macbook, mac mini and an imac and i have never had a problem with any of them, they don't crash, i have one of them permanently powered up and apart from software updates it hasnt been rebooted. Most of the people who dont like macs have never even had them. they are brilliant machines running excellant operating system.
PS ive also got an iphone 4 Ex D1, D2, D3 owner now 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE

I've worked in IT for 20 years and I've had laptops for the last 15. I changed to a MacBook 7 years ago and will not change back. I'm now on my 4th MacBook Pro (I get a new one every two years) and various family members are still using all of the previous 3 - not a problem with any of them. I gave one of my old ones to my 65 yo mum as her first computer for email etc and she is delighted with it and a few months later is importing photos from her digital camera and using facebook.

The thing about macs is if you are using them for mail, docs and web they work. There is no need to purchase expensive Anti-Virus, no need for Microsoft Office, no need for music management software, no need for photo management software etc its all on there or is available with iWork etc. Best thing is the lack of fluting around with drivers and other techie stuff that to be honest isn't needed in this day and age.

The one thing I need is that you open the lid and its up and running within 10 seconds, that is its best feature for me.

The hardcore techies at work all have the latest and greatest Dell's and Android phones as they need to run windows specific software so I am familiar with Windows and I have a Windows 7 PC at home which to be honest its not bad but its not a patch on the mac for ease of use and reliability.

I know they cost more but they last a long time and they work, therefore in my opinion at least they are worth the extra cost.

As for iPhone, iPad - they are not Macs they are social devices and should be treated as such.

Ah well thought i would treat myself today, called into the Apple store here in Glasgow after about a 45 min chat with one of the young sales team, ended up buying myself a Apple Mac Pro 15" laptop and a 27" Apple iMac desktop computer ........ This should be fun and games transferring stuff from Windows to Apple

Good move Mick, I converted a year ago. Many people are making the move from PC to Mac, but I've not met anybody who's gone the other way.

Probably worth booking an appointment at the Genius bar, to find out how to transfer all your stuff. I can't even remember how I did it a year ago, but it was pretty easy. I think I burned everything to DVD that I wanted to transfer. It's a good opportunity to 'de-clutter', chosing what you need rather than just transferring years of acquired junk.

One word of advice, my only regret since buying the Imac, and more recently a Macbook Air (best laptop I've had by a country mile), is putting Office on them. It's slowed down the MBA, reduced the battery life, and Outlook for example is just not as good as 'Mail'. Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

Cheers for the heads up bozmandb9 have booked with the Apple store some sort of One To One lessons they do .......... so hopefully in a couple of weeks i'll be winging thru the iMac .......

Bought an Apple Mac something last Wednesday, was walking through PC World and there it was sitting. In my mind I thought it would be great for when I'm up north or away on business as my other one packed in... still sitting in the box in the spare bedroom. Looks good though
