Wow that looks wonderful, is it something one can do in a classiccar? Anyone knows if there is any rally following this trial.

I think some classic clubs organise a trip round. you can even walk or do it on a bicycle, so yes no problem its only 519 miles or 836 Km. Geoff |

I've travelled on all of the route (albeit not as a project in itself) and there are some very attractive stretches. I'd say the west coast section is more scenic. August will be busier than May/June and the weather might be poorer. You need reasonable weather to get the full benefit. If you want to extend the journey with some other attractive roads, the A87 from Invergarry to Kyle and then over to Skye is worthwhile too, and maybe return from Skye via Armadale - Mallaig ferry and A830 to Fort William (includes Harry Potter film viaduct at Glenfinnan if your children like that, also steam trains on FW to Mallaig line). On the east side consider Perth - Braemar - Crathie (near Balmoral) - Tomintoul - Grantown - Nairn rather than the A9, which is congested in August and has average speed cameras on all single carriageway sections.

Another thought: the only franchise dealer on the route is Macrae & Dick in Inverness, though Pentland (the old Frank Ogg) is at Elgin, not far from Inverness. If you are on LR Assistance they generally have some arrangement with local garages in areas where there are no franchises, but some parts of this route are quite remote so a rescue might take a while. Only Range Rovers since 1988 |

Definitely keep an eye on fuel stops if you're doing it in the 5.0!

Seems most important is to keep an eye on the fuel, obviously I'll fill up before leaving Inverness and probably take every opportunity to keep the tank topped up on the way round. I am assuming that petrol stations are pretty scarce in the countryside in Scotland just like elsewhere in the UK - not a supermarket selling fuel round every corner. Geoff |

Also worth bearing in mind that mobile phone coverage is very patchy. |
