I haven't looked at the Garret turbo, mainly because my unit is still performing fine, at the moment, touch head!
Different gearbox options are more interesting at the moment, I've just had mine re-built and its not a happy box, I'm still getting torque vibration at 3% slip (30 -50) and it's driving me nuts. Its going back for more surgery next week, to find out what's going on. It doesn't do it all the time, just 85% of the time I get the feeling that they may have over tweaked the pressures and it's all a little too sharp in its operation.

What is the best box to use? 440 nm's don't sound like it will like 550 lb.ft! What does the X5 fire breather use, and can it be reverse engineered to fit? Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

the e70 xdrive35d seems to use the ZF 6HP26 box, which is pretty much the same box as the tdv8. i assume the xdrive40d uses the same, the latter cars use the ZF 8HP series. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

What about the ZF 5HP30 ? It's standard rating is for 425-450hp and 410 lb/ft of torque !!! are these a beefed up box or an entirely new design in a bigger case ? Would love to replace the GM box with this, if the electronics could be sorted, the BMW 5 & 7 Series also used this auto with the M57 Td6 engine, so hopefully the ECU's might match ?

Not when your covering 30k per year and towing about 50% of the time, if boot space wasn't a requirement, then I suppose that it would be in the running with a stupidly large LPG tank, 200lt's +. But if I had to go that route then a Yank Tank, would probably jump to the top of the list. I will admit that the FFRR is a little bit on the light side for what I'm pulling, but it copes fairly well, and has only forced me to reduce the top speed by 10 mph, but that does add up to rather a lot of time over 15k!  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

To be fair there is a decent amount of space under the car to fit some tanks if you really wanted and also chuck the spare wheel as well  FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

That would be an option, if I could change the rear bumper and not incur the wrath of plod and the insurance companies, because I'd put a swing away wheel on the back. I can't afford to go out with out a spare tyre, getting a puncture is bad enough with out having to pay an extra £160 + vat, to get a new one fitted at the side of the road. I suppose that there is always the expedition route, but the cost of a roof rack is , I think that they must be made of black gold, or yellow gold painted black  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Unfortunately the 5HP30 uses a different casing to the 5HP24 and as the BMW 5, 7 & 8 series, Aston Martin DB7, Bentley Corniche/Arnage and the Rolls Royce Silver Seraph (i.e. all the recipients of the 5HP30) were all rear-wheel drive there isn’t a casing available that will hook up to a transfer box.

The F-brake/clutch and sprag assembly is the main common part between the 5HP24 and the 5HP30, though the 5HP24 also borrows a few other bits and pieces from its bigger, older sister e.g. hydraulic spool valves and a few retaining clips.

If you converted a 1058 000 023 to a 1058 000 032 using H/D clutches etc what would be the maximum BHP & Torque inputs that you would recommend ?

Its been a while since discussed....but the 8hp70x as an option?.

I got the miss's a bmw 320d. they have the 8hp box, absolutely fantastic bit of kit. It got me thinking, this box has been designed to be "universal", apparently it runs entirely off Can bus with 4 wires in total, Power, earth, can-high, can -low.

this box, being universal, has been fitted into the 2010+ l322, its also been fitted to the E70 X5 (has N57 diesel). so. mechanically it can be done via a few mods to the bell housing (starter motor is in the wrong spot). The transfer case stepper motor would need to be controlled some how also as its would come from the later model rover also, but would also provide the much better torsen center diff. (arduino can easily control a stepper motor and switching signals from the existing l322 TCM)

Electrically...in my mind, chime in can bus experts (aka Gav if you're watching) is it possible to take the existing parameters the gear box needs from the existing TCM, put them all into an arduino powered CAN-Bus converter, and spit out a can signal into the 8hp? baud rates etc can be made to suit whatever is needed really. finding out what the trans requires would take a bit of research however...

Buddy if you can get that to work you'll be a Hero I believe that the later BMW cars have a different Can Bus protocol to the earlier system used on the 'ang' 'over, I did pose the question last year as to the feasibility for a 6 speed box from the X5... after all same engine, how hard can it be.... turns out very

You might be in a better position with your ffrr as it's a late one it might have the upgraded can bus.... but knowing the way our luck goes, it will more likely talk Ford ADO  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
