Not a good idea to plug it back in, well known problem, if the thermostat housing leaks the coolant gets sucked up the wiring loom and into the ECU, rots the pins and cost a fortune, it throws a code up but doesn't bring the MIL light on or create a "bong"

Ok plug won't be in then - it just sits at 101 I haven't left for much longer Mather I'll get some heat in later then leave it idling for 10 mins on the drive and report back. |

This is a mod I'm just about to do when the new stat turns up from Sebastian on eBay. Pics would be nice (p38arover) as I'm not quite sure how to mod the housing exactly or will the penny drop once I start the job? I'm also replacing the water pump will I'm at it. 2004 RR 4.4 V8 Autobiography |

It makes sense as you work your way through.

Back on page 1 of this thread, I've added links to my pics. I tried using the IMG tags but they don't seem to work with my externally hosted images. Ron B. VK2OTC

OK I need clarification on this. Correct me where needed. The kit on eBay uses our housing gutted to remove the solenoid to allow a more common thermostats with a range of temp options? So once it is modified I will only need to replace the inner less expensive thermostat? If I go with the 740D thermostat it gives me a direct swap minus the electrical connection, but I will need to buy it again at the next service time? |

Not quite correct. Yes, one guts the housing to remove the existing thermostat (not solenoid) and fit three adaptor plates which allow a conventional lower operating temperature thermostat to be fitted.

The M60 modified thermostat has also different dimensions. On ebay image you can compare original and modified thermostat. Modified thermostat's inner circulation plate is smaller in diameter and wrongly positioned. My worry is that the inner cooling circulation is not effectively blocked hot situation and hot coolant is partially recirculated without cooling it.

If you aren't happy with it then it's not for you, don't fit it and you won't have to worry about it...
