Just reading people's 'updated thermostat' stories, I fitted my kit, and all is well, but I think I replaced the plug connector. What is the reason to leave it disconnected.

Not a good idea to plug it back in, well known problem, if the thermostat housing leaks the coolant gets sucked up the wiring loom and into the ECU, rots the pins and cost a fortune, it throws a code up but doesn't bring the MIL light on or create a "bong"

When you say it gets to 100 deg after a few mins in traffic, then what happens?? does it stay there?? does the fan keep it at 100 or does it creep up....

Mine does similar but I don't have the viscous fan, I suppose the standard viscous fan is set to bring the temp down when it gets really hot with the standard stat in.... Pete

Ok plug won't be in then - it just sits at 101 I haven't left for much longer Mather I'll get some heat in later then leave it idling for 10 mins on the drive and report back.

I have fitted the kit.
93-95c seen mostly now, hit a high of 99c in traffic with ambient of 24c.

Very happy with this mod.
Less heat under bonnet and I think the engine is running quieter.

This is a mod I'm just about to do when the new stat turns up from Sebastian on eBay. Pics would be nice (p38arover) as I'm not quite sure how to mod the housing exactly or will the penny drop once I start the job? I'm also replacing the water pump will I'm at it. 2004 RR 4.4 V8 Autobiography

It makes sense as you work your way through.
I just cut the housing with a hacksaw, leave it a tad long and file flat......check with a straight edge or you may have sealing issues.

I also has filed a slight V for the bleed valve.
A 1/4 drive set is very handy for this job.

I put silicon into the hole that the wax thermostat occupied, just for piece of mind.

I have just made a 2500km round trip through snow country seeing temps down to minus 5c and extended periods of 110-120km/hr and saw a pretty constant 90c on the dash readout.
Down hill runs at speed saw the temp drop to 87c (thermostat set point)

What I do like about this stat is that you can check coolant level shortly after shut down, pressure in the system is greatly reduced.

Engine is less noisy and I dont hear any pinging now when engine is loaded up.

Back on page 1 of this thread, I've added links to my pics. I tried using the IMG tags but they don't seem to work with my externally hosted images. Ron B. VK2OTC

OK I need clarification on this. Correct me where needed. The kit on eBay uses our housing gutted to remove the solenoid to allow a more common thermostats with a range of temp options? So once it is modified I will only need to replace the inner less expensive thermostat? If I go with the 740D thermostat it gives me a direct swap minus the electrical connection, but I will need to buy it again at the next service time?

Not quite correct. Yes, one guts the housing to remove the existing thermostat (not solenoid) and fit three adaptor plates which allow a conventional lower operating temperature thermostat to be fitted.

If you fit the non-electrically powered thermostat housing from another model, you won't have to replace it at the next service. It should last for 100,000 km or more. Ron B. VK2OTC

The M60 modified thermostat has also different dimensions. On ebay image you can compare original and modified thermostat. Modified thermostat's inner circulation plate is smaller in diameter and wrongly positioned. My worry is that the inner cooling circulation is not effectively blocked hot situation and hot coolant is partially recirculated without cooling it.

If you aren't happy with it then it's not for you, don't fit it and you won't have to worry about it... Thumbs Up

Mines been in for two years, I've had no issues.... Thumbs Up Pete
