Steering wheel play?

As per title, it just feels like there's a momentary play in the steering. Also, the wheel is a couple of "minutes past the hour" in a straight line.

I want to check the nut that locks the lower steering column to the splined shaft on the steering rack is fully tightened up. Can someone please tell this desk bound office boy where the frigger is to be located please.

Thanks all

Under the air bag - not something you should be playing with if you are not sure.

That nut will stop the steering wheel coming off the splines will keep it tight in a rotary direction.

Was the steering spot on at twelve recently?

Any movement is likely to be in the steering geometry, ball joints, track rod ends, rack ends and few other joints all suspect. Any tyre wear?

I'd take it for tracking check where they can have a good look.

Many thanks mate.

I had her serviced at green oval in leeds a couple of months ago and they cited a NS "ball joint" (that's my phraseology not theirs) needed replacing before the MOT.

I had outside tyre wear not on the fronts so they swapped them to the back. Planning on getting new rubber however, the "new" fronts are fine (as are the rears except the outer inch or so) so I'm loath to go to the expense at the moment. Garage said to wait till they'd replaced the above item till I got tyres and or tracking etc.

Thanks again

Those column to rack bolts aren't going to come loose. I know this having tried to replace a similar items on a Disco 3. Twisted Evil

If it's not running true you have a worn ball joint by the sound of things. I just had a lower track control arm replaced on mine for this exact reason.

As said above, take it to a place that do MOTs and ask them to check all the suspension joints and bushes. They know exactly what to look for.

The pinch bolt on the lower steering column UJ, which connects the UJ to the steering rack splined shaft, can be found behind the engine tray under the front of the vehicle. You may have to remove the tray to gain access. If this pinch bolt is even slightly slack, it can cause a bit of free play in the steering. It has nothing to do with the nut gehind the airbag on the steering wheel.

There's been plenty of threads on this issue. Thumbs Up

Pinch bolt as said, but check the ball joints on the track rod ends, it's tricky to tell with it on the ground but you can have a look, look under the front of the car by the wheel arches and you will see the steering track rods, if you get someone to wiggle the steering wheel then if there is any play you should be able to see it in the ball joints at the end. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Get a couple of glossy magazines, one under each front wheel. Get a helper to turn to full lock and then waggle the steering you will see of feel any worn joint, if you don't want to tack it to a garage.
