Oil leak & bit of smoke :PCV hoses / part numbers?

I've had a recurring oil leak which I thought was from the rocker cover gaskets, these have been replaced but the leak is still there. It's particularly bad in the near side lower part of the engine and covers the drive & stealing gaiters in oil.

With that in mind and the fact I'm getting blue smoke under hard acceleration (but ONLY on hard acceleration) I think it may be the PCV hoses - there's a banjo type joint on a hose down there that's also quite oily too

How many are there and any ideas of part numbers? Is it a big job (how many hours labour would I be expected to pay to replace them)

Thanks in advance
Steve

Fairly straight forward job but it can be fiddly and means laying on top of the engine to get to them. You'll know if they need done if you lift the plastic cover and at the back there are two rubber hoses which run across the top of the engine - if they are squishy then they will all need done and that could be causing the oil leak.

Those 2 main pipes are
Part 8510366 , LLH000130
Part 8510367 , LLH000140

The other two pipes are a bit lower down and more fiddly

Short fat stubby hose - LLH000110
Long thin hose - LR003814

The parts don't cost much, but I sourced a silicone set which have lasted much longer.

Your blue smoke could be the PCV valve (Part number LKR000040) which should be checkec / changed at the same time

Also the Oil separator / cyclone which will probably be gummed up too - these can sometimes be cleaned or to replace the part number is LLP000010

Plenty of information on the Wiki as to how to replace them. Current Fleet:-

Nick - any idea of part numbers for the oil return pipe shown as no.14? Is it a good idea to replace that too? 2003 Vogue 4.4 V8 Java Black

Hi Steve
I think its LSP500010 - Crankcase Ventilation

Its not a part on mine which I've had problems with so can't really help you, but haven't heard its something which needs routinely replaced- but others might have a different opinion. I guess if the banjo bolt is leaking then it will need doing unfortunately though.

Good luck
cheers

I just did this job.... Had the same problems you described...
Really straight forward... But as Nicksaab said, be prepared to get real intimate with the engine.
I, as most who did this job, had troubles unscrewing the (6 or so) torx headed screws which keep the PCV in place. Most of them get screwed. I my case I had to use an iron saw to get one off.. If you get the PCV off replace the bolts with 10mm hex head screws. The bolts should be 6mm x 1.0 x 25mm.

This page: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/B...cement.htm is very helpful.

I ordered silicone hoses to replace the top two hoses, and the small oil return hose, also painted the rocker covers when I removed them to replace the gaskets

Also found this site to be very helpful: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/partgrp?id...&mg=11.
I ordered all of the replacement parts (see partnumbers at realoem) at the BMW dealer, prices being very reasonable. 2002 L322 V8

Thanks everyone , I've bought all the bits , done the top silicon hoses myself (much much better than the standard crap!) found it was a bit tight attaching them to top of oil separator as they're larger diameter.

Question - once the valve is replaced too (my one is clearly failing as its full of oil Crying or Very sad )
Will the oil leak(s) 'heal' when the crankcase pressure drops back to normal ?? Hoping it will be the end of it - have most people that have replaced the pipes found it cured their leaks? I've already changed the rocker cover gaskets - I hope head gaskets aren't needed too Big Cry 2003 Vogue 4.4 V8 Java Black
