Something fishy with the screenwash

Phew - what a stink has suddenly started pervading the cab every time I use the screenwash. My daughter says it smells like the dead fish at the bottom of a pond (not too far off) and I have had it previously, but never as bad as this time. I have tried some of that concentrated smelly stuff that you add to the tank, but it just smells like rotting corpses splashed with a bit of the wife's Christmas perfume. I dont know if there are some screenwashes to avoid but I usually just buy the cheapest. I hope I am not about to start a discussion about bacteria etc creating the smell, but does anybody have a suggestion for a screenwash that doesn't smell like an approaching zombie apocalypse? QUID FACIUM TIBI

IIRC throw some clean water in and then some steradent to help clean all the accumulated crap that's causing the smell ,or you try removing the whole washer bottle and cleaning it L322 2008 vogue

I would empty the tank and use Milton (the stuff used to sterilise babies bottles ) .Rinse well and use a good screen wash .

I've had stinky screenwash when I've pre mixed it & not used it for a while, smells like a rotten pond stirred up.

Normally use stuff from halfrauds & smells ok. 2011 (MY12) 4.4 TDV8 Vogue

I would be inclined to empty the screenwash tank and then fill it with a strong solution of water and Domestos and leave it at least overnight before emptying and refilling with new screenwash solution.

That's exactly what I had to do. Hot water and strong bleach, give the thing a good shake, leave for an hour, rinse out with a hose. Refill with Halfords purple (Berry smelling) screenwash. Never had an issue since.

Screenwash is an alcohol of some kind, (IMS or ethanol) with water, detergent, dye and perfume.
Cheaper brands tend to use ethanol or similar but there can be health risks as it’s nasty stuff especially in airborne droplets!
Yes you spray it on your windscreen!
Different freezing points are just the amount of alcohol in the mix.
Sounds like yours has gone a bit stagnant as suggested rinse out the tank and try a very weak bleach solution or miltons. Although we did buy some reclaimed French IMS that smelt like brandy but not in a nice way.

Just add Miltons or any supermarket brand solution, leave it overnight and expel some through washers to clean the pipes, drain rest from tank and all done. Learnt this from my folding camper after over wintering the water barrel and tap pipes were black with slime. Miltons is non corrosive and mild, household bleach is corrosive.
