L322 would not start and engine failsafe prog message

Hi, only driven our 03 plate 4.4 v8 once this week when took it for an lpg service. Came to start it today and just got one relay click and everything went dead as if battery had died. There was still a green marker on the battery but couldn't test it due to my meter being broken.
So got jump leads and tried starting it but all I could here was the relay clicking. Disconnected leads thinking of taking battery out to charge it but thought would try starting car once more, started perfectly.
Drove it a mile up road and came to start it an hour later, would not start but would then start by jumping it.

Along with this it put up
a warning message engine failsafe prog
of. And air suspension inactive. Tested air suspension out after got car running and it work but front left is about 5mm lower than front right, strut looks old but right looks new. Compressor took ages to put car in off road height, went up quick but last few mm took ages. Looks like that strut might need changing but could the two problems be related?
What should I look for? I have heard of battery draining problems with the l322. Think I will get a new battery to be sure it's not just that, don't know how old this one is.
Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers
James

The problem will almost certainly be power related rather than EAS related... Start with looking at battery cables and engine earths. Sounds like there maybe a fault with a connection.

Thumbs Up

Hi, thanks. I have recently fitted a replacement dvd drive for the sat navigation, I wonder if it could be that? Only other things have done is to replace front side lights with led bulb and replaced rear window wiper and unblock.

As Craig said, classic dirty contact on one of the large leads from battery via positive post on bulkhead to started and alternator...

Also read the correct battery disconnection procedure in the WIKI to reset after connection...

Link to WIKI under fullfatrr.com top right of page...

What you have done will have no effect on this problem.... Pete

So you think I should disconnect the battery and clean the battery lead contact surfaces?

Checked the light on the dvd unit is going out and it is. Does the proximity of the car key when it's parked up make any difference? My mums rav4 kept draining battery due to the key being close by.

AFAIK on our earlier ones it doesn't wake up when the key gets near, only when you unlock it...

Clean both battery terminals and the positive jump start post on the bulkhead in front of the battery, you have to disconnect then to clean them...

Once you know they are clean and fine then read the other article about electrical faults in the WIKI and check the battery condition and charging... you have at least 17 ECU's in your car and they spit their dummy out if they don't get the correct voltage, they then start sulking and lie to you, telling you this and that is broken.... it's all down to voltage... well, normally...!!! Thumbs Up Pete

when you look at the clamps on the terminals, there should be a bit of the post sticking above the clamp. this means the clamp is (low down) and gripping, if its high on the tapered post, it will be clamped, but possibly not gripping. its normal to clean up the posts, and inside the clamps, with some sandpaper type stuff, and then to wipe some decent amount of Vasalene over the contact areas and then bolt down etc. this stops the build up of that white crust, that makes the connection 'dry'/high resistance.
just mind the tool you use to tighten them, doesn't touch anything metal.
I sort of push them on, (you get a slight sparking) and twist them down, and then tighten them.
p.s your red cable has an airbag blow off device on the battery terminal , to disconnect the battery should the worst happen. mind the yellow thin wires that run to/from it.

Problem solved. Loose negative connection in battery, didn't appear lose after I first looked at it, I guess the mechanic must have disconnected it when I had the lpg system serviced.
