Found this in the manual

The main engine thermostat is of a pressure relief design. The prime function of this thermostat is to use the heater and ancillary circuit as the only radiator by-pass while the thermostat is closed.
The pressure relief thermostat gradually opens the main radiator by-pass circuit at engine speeds above 1500rpm. This system ensures that the maximum available coolant flow is directed to the heater and ancillary heat exchangers during warm-up without affecting the durability of the engine. By using this type of thermostat there is enough heater flow for all conditions without the need for a dedicated electric water pump.

Fast idle to check what's going on, methinks.

Now I can't get it to lose coolant. Took it for a good drive and nothing. Stayed exactly at the same level. The only difference was the AC was off. ______________________________

G'day Pete,

I'd be interested where you got and what camera it is?

Sounds like a frustrating issue, watching with interest.

Gday Jerry
Yes a bit frustrating. I put it in to the mechanic who pressure tested it and can't find a leak either. Will see how it goes.

The camera is from eBay. Great value for money. Link below.

Took it for another 25 min HW run tonight. I gave it the berries on the way back sitting on about 4000 rpm. No drop in coolant level. Weird. ______________________________

That is weird

How long since the cooling system has been worked on (meaning drained for a repair or something)?

Wondering if it hadn't been vented properly?

So after doing the EGRs on mine it turns out reassembling the top of the engine at midnight isn't the best plan after several long days at work and home.

Basically I've been chasing coolant leaks the whole time - thought I'd sorted it when I noticed I hadn't put one of the clips on properly and the pipe blew off. On the way into work this morning (been using the 110 recently) I had a check coolant despite topping it up this morning - but it only happened when it got up to temperature.

I hadn't put another pipe on properly and when it got up to temperature it was causing enough of a gap that stuff was seeping out when hot. Perhaps you have a similar situation (not the forgetting to clip up stuff) but a dodgy pipe which only leaks when at a certain pressure / temperature / angle combination.

I've found mine to be pretty robust if you don't bleed / vent it properly. Ed

I'm starting to think it wasn't quite bled properly too. Maybe my mucking around with it has fluked a fix.

I had the alternator replaced in Nov last year, which involves removing the coolant reservoir. ______________________________

Hey Pete,

Is your low coolant level sensor working?

Mine dosnt, even after replacing the sensor, just don't have the time to find the fault. But I check the coolant level weekly.

Paul

Gday Paul

I'm not sure if the sensor works. It's at the very bottom on my L322. Maybe it doesn't trigger unless it's fully empty, which seems a bit late for a warning. ______________________________

I believe the sensor also alerts if the coolant mixture is wrong

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the info on the camera.

At least then you know its not the HG's! Did you find out if its the Thermo?

Ta Paul, I didn't know the sensor was that good.

Gday Jerry, yes was a bit worried about HG or worse a cracked head. But seems that is off the list of probable causes. I don't know about the thermostat. However the housing was replaced by the previous owner only about 3 years ago from memory. ______________________________
