Me again with another dead gearbox TD6

So ive done it again, bought another shed Range Rover Td6. This one has the gearbox already dead unlike the other which limped around for a while before it died. £3100 delivered to my house.

Its a 2003 Td6 with a 2007 (i think) facelift, 22" L405 wheels, sidesteps, Bluetooth and 180kish miles.

The problem is the gearbox is stuck in drive, meaning the car cannot be turned on. Is there a stupid fault causing this which can be sorted or is it the same as when the gearbox looses drive and needs sent away to be rebuilt?

Also the bonnet wont open on the passenger side, the guy I got it off said he had just had both bonnet latches replaced. If anyone knows a trick for getting it open it would be much appreciated.

I'm quite new to the L322 so my advice might not be spot on.

However, does the gear stick move? If so, it could maybe be the sensor that tells what gear it is in?

Hope you get it sorted out.. and my TD6 doesn't go the same way Censored

1. Gear Lever. Worth checking that the linkage from the lever to the box is not seized/bent.

2. Remove LHF wheel. Remove LHF inner wheelarch. Attack LHF bonnet latch Shocked .

Not sure I worded it right, I can move the lever from park/drive/neutral/reverse but in the box it's self it's stuck in drive. The man selling it said he was just driving home and it popped up transfailsafe so he pulled over and tried put it in park but it remained in drive, ie trying to move forward against the brakes.

Perfectly happy to have it rebuilt but due to the fact it has drive it sounds like a different problem.

with car jacked and axle stand etc, underneath, there will be a cable selector . if someone is in car, moving the lever, the cable should be moving on the gearbox. if its not, you may have an easy cable replacment.

i got a lovely 7 series bmw with exactly this, and he had been to two dealers and both had quoted a whole gearbox.
cable was £30!

On the TD6 it is a metal rod. If the gear lever moves but nothing happens, sounds like it has come adrift, either at gearbox or at gear lever, although not sure why you would get a TFM ? .

Yeh im not quite sure what the message is related to yet, even after I had a recon box fitted to my other one if the old battery was low charge.

Maybe it is just that and hes somehow dislodged the rod connecting the gear leaver while switching to park in a panic at seeing the message.
