Hi Axle,

Do you live near the sea, or been driving on the beach?

After only four years something caused it.

Hi Axle

I have a few days off and can you believe I did this on both cars today.

They weren't as bad as your picture - only a slight rust on the face - however I took off both straps and took apart - placed them in a vice and wire brushed the ends.

Then I ve sprayed Hammerite Black over he metal - left in the sun all afternoon and they are rock hard coated in Hammerite Black - that should stop any rust getting their

Easy job to do and I think it would be well worth the effort.

Note: when you do up the nuts ( both top and bottom ) leave then slightly slack as movement has to take place in order for the strap to fold down.

anyway - good post Alex - well worth mentioning to all FFRR owners Thumbs Up

I just replaced mine after one broke.

A smear of grease under the rubber cap once a year would help a lot I think. ______________________________

Love your Rangie as your supposed too !

Here's what Ive done - easy to do - just ensure you photograph all the pieces before you take apart to help when you rebuild - NOTE: do not tighten up nuts too tight - they have to have a bit of slack in in order to move when tail gate is closed. ( check when you have finished )

Hope this helps anyone.
