Mine has just had a pretty good Hayland Tune-up with new CSOV valve and actuator arm fitted.
I am guilty of not doing it often in the past but have learned my lesson.

Well I regularly drive it like I stole it and stuff is still bunged up. Mind you previous owners could have done the "damage" because it's bloody awful stuff to shift.

I do do a lot of motorway miles with it but also (when running) an 8 mile commute but do give it the beans on the way. But usually every week there's a reasonable trip.

Having said all this my 300Tdi which was factory fit no EGR in comparison is spotless inside the intakes.

If it wasn't for the fact I now know this car reasonably well I'd consider a 5L supercharged. That and I feel they're a little chintzy, still great looking but have a bit too much overhangs stuff at the front and back. Might be perception but its only my opinion.

Now L322 as the drive train and chassis but Defender looks, that would be a timeless vehicle. Ed

Hi Mick,

I would be interested in which charger you use and how you connect it.
I have a CTek which is excellent for my wife's under-used Merc SL350.
But when I connect it to my Fatty's (nickname RaRa) battery terminals it doesn't half get hot.

I am currently in Medellin, Colombia (for son's wedding and a bit of R&R afterwards, no white powder jokes please) and I would have left it trickle charging good old RaRa if I had the confidence that it would cool down after a few hours.

Any comments gratefully received.

I use an Accumate charger, and have permanently connected the wires to the battery (I then simply plug the charger in when required, before connecting to the mains). No problems with temperatures on either my FF, or on the D3 that preceded it.

I'd say that if your terminals get warm, you either have a partially-discharged battery that it's trying to top-up, or a serious drain somewhere ... Regards,

Hi My sons girlfriend works for a firm that makes cats and DPFs and they recommend 20 mins a week at "motorway speeds" to burn carbon out of the DPF to prevent it clogging up.So this seems to support your theory.

I have a VW Transporter with the 2.0TDi engine and use it mainly around town for short runs and every so often the DPF warning light comes up and advises to drive between 1800 - 2500 rpm until the light goes out so the above is true, regular "beans given" is certainly the best way.............just have to get used to doing it the RR as I've always been a very light right foot type of driver, looking forward to getting into a new habit then Very Happy

I use caterpillar engines at work, the 3516 if you are interested, these are a sixteen cylinder twin turbo engines of about 75 litres capacity. (Not sure of the exact capacity, as when you get to engines of this size it is no longer relevant)
One of the main problems we have is glazed bores due to the low load that they are run at for most of the time.
The main reason is fuel consumption, at low revs it uses about twenty five litres an hour, but at max (1880) it uses five hundred.
The pressure to reduce costs on fuel leads directly to extra costs in maintenance.
A quick blast ance a week/month will save money in the long run! Got enemies? Good, you have stood up for something in your life.
