I have noticed that when starting up my 3 week old TDV8 (2007MY) after it has been sitting for a day or so the brake pedal is solid. After starting the engine and after a few moments the pedal regains its travel. if the pedal is pumped 4 or 5 times in quick succession with the engine running it goes solid again - this also happens when on the move resulting in no braking which is a bit of a worry! The pedal regains travel and the brakes start working again after about 4 or 5 seconds. When the engine has just been turned off and the pedal is pumped it takes 2 to 3 pumps before the pedal goes solid.

All that aside and in "normal" situations the brakes seem effective and smooth, although they can be a bit "bitey" when dabbed and travelling/crawling slowly.

Could this be a failed or failing brake master cylinder/accumulator?

Sometimes for about 5 minutes or so after the engine has just been started, i can hear a quite intermittent humming/groaning noise come from the front nearside of the engine bay - could this be related i.e brake master cylinder/accumulator recharging?

Another brake question: no matter how hard i try and however much i try and feather the brakes, i find it virtually impossible to stop without a tiny little bump as i come to an actual stop. Is this normal or should i be able to stop without feeling a thing - again could this be related to the above?

Any thoughts?

Sounds like there might be a slight leak at the servo

going in for its 55k service next week and will get it sorted - hopefully under warranty!

Fuel burning heater. It provides warm air to the cabin on these cold mornings (comes on automatically) , and makes the kind of noises you describe
