Do we think I have worn suspension parts?

OK, had this checked once by a local garage a while back and they said all was ok but I am not convinced.

When I dab the brakes I get wheel wobble through the steering wheel but not when I am drving along, and although it's hard to 'feel' it gradually over time I think the RR is a bit more crashy over the bumps and not as smooth as it could be.

I've never had to have any upper or lower suspension arms, bushes or track rod ends replaced on any of my cars (which is either amazing or not right somehow) so I am a bit of a beginner when it comes to knowing what might be up here. I don't know what the symptoms would feel like.

Could play in the suspension arms, the bushes, track rod ends etc cause this?

Anyone got any ideas of what I can get a garage to look for?

you could be looking at a lot of different causes Adam.

could be

Worn inner or outer Track rod ends
worn upper or lower ball joints

or simply discs warped.

or a sticking rear caliper.

money is on one or all of them..... Thumbs Up

Not too helpful i Know. You can check the ball joints, if you lie under the car and look at them while someone else wiggles the wheel then you would be able to see play if they were worn. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

The front discs and pads were very recently replaced with genuine so doubt it is that. Car has done 82k now.

Does the car need to be jacked up and weight off the suspension to detect play or fully weighted? Discovery 4 HSE

It depends how bad the play is. I could see the play in my lower ball joints on my old one with the car on the floor. Also should be able to see the track rods with a wiggle.

Also check to see if the gaiters round the joints and driveshafts are in good nick. When I had a juddering on the 3.6 it was a split gaiter which had dumped a load of grease onto the disc and pad.

Have you checked to see if the rears are hot. Afaik they are the same as on the 4.4 which can bind. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I've had wheel wobble from a sticking rear caliper and a partially deflated tyre with a slow leak - but not from worn bushes (they just squeaked over every bump). You haven't lost a balancing weight?

Crashing only from tyre pressures being higher than normal after the garage helpfully topped them all up!

I had a similar symptom on an E38 7 series which has a very similar suspension set up (E38->E53->L322). It's a common problem on them and is usually due to soft traction links. Item five on this diagram.

Was the wobble present before the brakes were changed? and did the wobble appear just after the brakes were changed..... it only takes a bit of dirt under the disc and the car will be all over the place Shocked and then you can get discs that wobbly straight from the box..... just because it says Genuine doesn't mean that it's 100%, the odd miss shaped one can get through, it could be a wheel balance thing.... normally when it's a suspension / steering component the car wanders full stop, not just under braking Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... I have the same problem and checked the balljoints and track rod ends for play and they seem to be ok. The bushes on the upper suspension arm do look a bit soft so I'm going to replace them and see if it solves the problem. I took the wheels off and rotated the discs to see if I could see whether there was a warp or not assuming I would see them move in and out against the brake pads but all look fine. I only have the RRFF since November and there were new pads on it when I bought it so it could possibly be the pads. Declan

Miggit

There was some wobble before I replaced the discs and pads.

I don't think any wheel weights have gone, can't see anything obvious. My tyres are at the point of replacement so wondered if that's a potential area.

Guess I just need a good garage to look it over. Discovery 4 HSE

I think you would more likely get a wobble while driving from bad tyres / balance issue rather than only when breaking. Incidently, I have all new tyres on mine. Declan

Are but under braking you transfer at least 70% of the cars weight / inertia to the front wheels, more under an emergency situation Shocked So the slightest imperfection can be amplified Sad Sad Could even be grease on the discs Shocked Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Replaced the suspension arm bushes this morning which were fairly shot and delighted to say all wheel wobble on breaking has disappeared.

Local garage (not LR specialists) had it on the ramps today and rang me right at the end of the day to say they finally found the source of the wobble.

They reckon its the brake disc backing plates or brake shields as we know them, they say the drivers side needs replacing and that's why I get steering wheel wobble.

As far as I understand it, it's a static part, and so even if it were corroded at the fixing bolts, would it REALLY transmit vibration through the wheel like a very severe wheel imbalance? And surely it would make a rattling noise too?

Before I had the new genuine discs and pads done on the front I wondered if it was all down to the rubbish discs, but it was still there. I've had the wheels balanced countless times to be told they were fine anyway.

I asked the garage to check all the suspension components, bushes, suspension arms, track rod end ball joints etc, they have not reported that anything has any wear, which at 82,000 miles I find hard to believe.

Not sure what to do other than get a second opinion and find a LR specialist instead. Discovery 4 HSE

Would get it to an Indy or LR garage, and get them to have a look. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
