Sounds likely to be an injector issue or potentially a EGR value with the end dropped off, don't ask how I know that one...

good luck with the repairs

Where did the EGR valve end up? I think this is the problem.

Sadly now seen a number of failed EGR valves on 3.6’s and one on a 4.4 where the end of the valve breaks of and the bits go down through the valves and the pistons then stamp them back against the cylinder head, end result in these failures is a scrap head and piston and potentially a scrap block.

if you plug in to a diagnostic check the EGR valve still shows its working, because the stem is still moving as it should, but the valve itself has broken up, for any of these engines preventatively changing the EGR valves is a good move.

Next step is strip the top end so you can check the EGR valves are still in place 2-3 hours work tops and depending on the outcome of that investigation you would likely take the engine out and strip it, which is easier than fighting to get the heads off with the engine in situ in my view.

Good luck I hope sincerely, I am wrong for you and that it’s something else and cheaper.

She currently in the garage having the head removed to get at the EGR. Well at least that what I think is happening. It's very strange because its running apart from misfire. I see on another thread you are in contact with Land Rover regarding engine failure, I doubt this will be of any help to me. I'm trying to source a replacement engine, but they are costly.

If an EGR valve is damaged, what do you suggest I do then? Would like to get her back up and running. Think I'm going to part with her then, sadly whilst much nicer than a LandCruiser. No where near as reliable. If only Land Rovers were as reliable as Toyotas. Sad

The EGR valve broke and went into the engine. That is where we are currently at.

Second hand engine anyone? Cylinder head? Really unsure how to move forward.

Sorry to hear that, from here your options are limited by lack of supply of parts from LR.

You either sell as is and hope you find a buyer who will take it on as a project.

Or

Take a deep breath and embark on a strip and build with no clear way of knowing what you’re getting yourself into, Heads are available new but are expensive, engine parts, some are available new most are second hand only and as a result are expensive and not easy to get.

Second hand engines are fraught with risk, I can vouch for that...

Finding someone who you can trust with actually rebuilding your engine is a challenge, certainly be very sceptical of any of the company who offer “fixed” cost reconditioning service on E bay and in the trade papers, mine lasted 3,000 miles before it went bang...

So I really feel for your plight, there is no easy way forward with these engines, a new full engine from LR is circa £9k + turbos.

As above, sorry to hear about the damage.

Until the engine is stripped then you won't know what is needed to put it right. either way it is a big job, possible piston damage etc, it really depends on what broke off and how far it got into the intake.

You could just be looking at some head work if it got stuck in one of the intake valves or a piston or too if it got further.

First Job would be to have the head off on the bank where the EGR blew, and see what can be seen. If it looks repairable, then the other side would be next off to check for damage.

if its hasn't damaged the bores and pistons then the chances are the bottom end is still OK, but draining the oils and removing the sump may tell more.

So far the engine has not had to come out BUT it won't be dead cheap just to have a look and the heads are expensive, and as said second hand recon engines are a gamble, some are decent some less so, but as the heads are not prone to many problems it may be possible to pick one up from a breakers complete with valves etc. but even the used ones on Ebay are 800+ each at the moment, to put it in perspective the 4.4 diesel heads are 400 each. a new one is about £1300+ subject to stock. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I'm very sorry to hear it is worse than we hoped. I'd say get a full damage assessment first to see whether it is an engine replacement or a fix of the current engine.

This starts to sound like a problem that would warrant a recall, not that JLR would do that but they should if this is becoming a regular issue with older TDV8 models. Makes me glad I passed on the TDV8 I was considering before I decided to go with the SC. Anyway that doesn't help you.

By the way, Landcruisers are not that great either, they do have problems and I think their reputation is only partly deserved. They may be more reliable than FFRRs but they do have issues as well (we had one that had more problems than my 4.2 and that wasn't a great one either).

So back on topic, once you know what needs to be done to fix the current engine you can look at the cost of replacing it with another engine. Lets hope that nothing went into the lower block and that the damage to the one cylinder is limited and fixable as that would hopefully be the cheapest solution. Plus of course new EGRs or emulators. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Yes terrible news and very sorry to see it panning out this way.

I have to admit when I read these sort of threads, I look at my car and, wish I had a Defender.

I hope you come to some resolution over this bad experience.

Cheers, Jerry THIS WRECKAGE

Cheers everyone for your comments and feedback. It is indeed sad that the situation has come to this. However, no one is hurt and I will get her sorted. Alas, each time something like this happens it does damage my passion for the Land Rover brand.

I truly believe they are wonderful cars, however they do have issues with reliability and I hope Land Rover are getting on top of it. No other brand has quite as much failures! I know many people who would not drive a Land Rover, for this reason alone. When they are working they are brilliant, but your always left wondering what will be next - in this case an engine.

Since purchasing this vehicle 5,000 miles ago I have replaced - two rear tailgate struts, front left air suspension bag and now soon to be the engine. I'm left thinking that once fixed I should part with her and buy something like a Landcruiser. Whilst it wont work or tow quarter as well the RR, at least all things being equal it should work!!!

Will keep you all in the loop.

Landcruisers aren't all they're cracked up to be. Our Landcruiser in Nigeria was far less reliable (and comfortable) than my 4.2 SC and that SC wasn't the most reliable either. My 5.0 SC has been faultless to date at 6 years of age and 90k miles.

I think that although statistically the FFRR is not as good as the Landcruiser in the reliability section, there are a lot of FFRRs out there that are just running without any major issues for a long time.

Your's is also not the youngest (2003 according to your profile although you're talking about a TDV8 i.e. later model ??) so that is playing a part as well. I mean my 20 year old S320 Merc is not perfect either despite being of the generation that was absolutely amazingly bullet proof, age is showing there but only in the small things Wink

I'm not saying that it is acceptable that these sort of critical components fail like this, that is not acceptable at all in my book, I'm just saying don't think that Landcruisers are without fault, we had steering issues on a regular basis, fuel pump issues, AC breaking down all the time, brake issues from time to time. And although it had a hard life on Nigerian roads and the climate my 4.2 also had the same hard life. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
