The actual issue is with lack of support in this sense; what was meant to happens was that repeat offenders i.e. someone who received a third FPN for the number plate offence, would have their number plate withdrawn by the DVLA (as was). They would be issued a date-relevant standard plate and the personal number would be re-sold.

What actually happened was that the DVLA declined to enforce this so Traffic, certainly those down here, rightly or wrongly felt they were wasting their time pursuing the p-takers when the government in the form of the DVLA clearly didn't care.

Nowadays, only the most blatant alterations will be ticketed because of reduced officer numbers, government targets, local initiatives etc etc Why do you think the government are spending money on 'modernising' the ANPR?

Years ago, like I'm talking 1990's, a mate of mine owned a car hi fi shop. He had the plate AUD 10 on his XR2. I asked how much he'd paid for that and he said nothing, it's not his, but the fine he gets from the police is much less than the plate is worth along with the business it brought in.

Guess you couldn't do it nowadays with all the computers. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

All you have to do is look at the next DVLA auction

The interesting thing here is not really what people do with their number plates.

I understand the whole point about costing more in time to police it but that is because it has got so out of hand now that it would take ages if everyone was stopped and fined with "suspect" plates.

The issue for me is that it is the LAW... We should not live in a society where WE make up our minds what laws to abide by and what laws we choose to ignore.

If it is not worth pursuing any with the exception of only certain plates/layouts etc worth pulling in then the law should be changed accordingly. There should not really a grey area here.

I won't go off topic but it is the same with all the talk about celebs and the like immorally using tax avoidance schemes. There is nothing immoral or illegal in avoiding tax. The law is the law - if the government want to stop it then they need to change the law.

(steps off soap box)

anyway - I have personal plates cos I chose to - not expensive ones - just my initials prefixed on a dated plate. Correctly spaced etc... Ash

Have to admit I have private plates on my FFRR, BUT they are legal... All spacing correct. I have two sets one on my car, one on my wife's. They are matching but in reverse of each other, just makes them look much older than they are. To anyone reading them they would, or may wonder, why the plates are older than the cars I.e. 54 plated on a FFRR MY11 and a Countryman that's a MY16. For us it was a bit of fun and sentimentality. But I agree that the law should be the law. Not one rule for one and another for someone else (or just when they feel like it). If it's kept legal no problem! Just my pennies worth... Thumbs Up

It is an act of treason to place a postage stamp bearing the British monarch upside-down
In Liverpool, it is illegal for a woman to be topless except as a clerk in a tropical fish store
Mince pies cannot be eaten on Christmas Day
In Scotland, if someone knocks on your door and requires the use of your toilet, you must let them enter

I don't know why these aren't enforced more rigorously - just what are our lazy Police doing all day Whistle

Cam-Tech-Craig, as a punishment for your crimes those vehicles should be confiscated immediately and raffled to the forum members here that do not partake in such activities.

I guess you have to have an eye for the mis-space - it would be easy to skim past that one in the auction catalogue.
