L322 Carphone options

Hi

Our 2003 L322 has the old style handset under the centre console and works fine. We currently have a pay as you go sim card in in for emeregencies.

Ideally though, I would like to use the screen, steering wheel controls and all the existing microphone and wiring, but use Bluetooth from our phones instead.

I understand that I could swap out the phone bit in the boot for the Bluetooth version, but is that all I need, and what part number should I be looking for (presumably a BMW one will work o.k)

Interestingly, my old 2003 Mercedes had a built in car phone, and a company called Viseoo make a device that slots into the existing phone holder to make the car Bluetooth - worked really well, but they don't do a version for the L322.

I have tried searching but am getting information overload with what could be done, and what cant.

Any advice much appreciated.

Cheers in advance

Neil.

Are you sure it hasn't already got the bluetooth module installed as part of the nokia kit? Mine gives no hint that it has bluetooth until you get in the car scan on your phone and LAND ROVER pops up.

Hi

I am 99% sure I don't get a Bluetooth thing come up if I search for it on my phone - that said, I didn't really expect so since they never really pushed BT in 2003, and as far as I know/can tell from reading, it wasn't even an option. - @ Navrac, could yours have been retrofitted already, which is why it works?

Anyway, I'm fairly sure I should be in the right track by purchasing a BMW ULF like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E46-E53-X5-H...SwhcJWKWvN

but what I don't know is it is a case of straight forward swap with the existing phone module in the boot, and what else is required?

I Think (again from reading) that I need a wiring adaptor before it will work or blow something up, but Ive no idea what exactly this is, or what to search for on ebay.

One last thing - how do you know what version the ULF is? - again, I've read that there are 12 versions (and you ideally need the latest one for iphones etc) but what tells you on the stickers on the ULF what version is what.

Sorry for the million questions!

Neil.

Ahh mine is a bit later so it had the bluetooth module in the nokia box as standard. I did have to upgrade it though to get it to work properly and give me the phonebook etc. However mine was a 2005 MOST system which is completely different.

The module compatibility etc seems to be a nightmare with these cars - there doesn't seem to be a list of what works with what , dealers know even less than can be found on the forums.

However looking at this thread

http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic14122.html?highlight=2003+ulf

looks like it is possible with some repinning of a connector.

and in one of the links it suggests the following ULF modules

84 21 6 934 961 end of life 03/04 3rd generation
84 21 6 950 089 end of life 06/04 4th generation
84 21 6 945 387 end of life 01/05 5th generation
84 10 6 955 522 end of life 10/05 6th generation
84 10 6 969 268 end of life 04/06 7th generation
84 21 6 958 358 end of life 05/06 8th generation
84 10 6 987 546 end of life 9/06 9th generation
84 10 6 980 130 end of life 11/06 10th generation
84 10 9 133 329 end of life 1/07 11th generation
84 10 9 145 007 end of life 05/07 12th generation
84 10 9 154 358 current production 13th generation

So the one in the ebay advert is a 84.21.6.938 610 so isn't on the list.

but this one

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E46-E39-E53-...SwlV9WShuc

is

and the repinning chart is here.

http://www.fullfatrr.com/gallery/albums/us...Pinout.pdf

I did look at the Viseeo system - since it emulates a nokia phone I can't see why it wouldn't work - but I didn't want to fork out the £140+ to try it and I couldn't find any threads anywhere where someone had tried it already.

IVor - mine came up with a hex screen as well the first time. I paired with it using the code 2121 and since then it announces itself as land rover. Give it a try!

Excellent info, thank you.

One thing though, the item you listed (the ULF) is (if I read it right) a first generation ulf. I'm not really sure what this means so I wonder if I can sync my phone book using iPhone with the car and use voice control?

As an aside, there is one on eBay now that is 112 quid but they say it's been upgraded to the latest version for all the latest phones- but the numbers are the same as the first gen module, which makes me think that as long as you had any module you could upgrade it to the latest?

Of course I could be barking up the wrong tree or the guy selling it could be saying anything to command a higher price etc.

The one you pointed out on ebay wasn't on the list of generation 3 and up ( the original post said don't bother with generation 1 or 2 modules) so the ebay link I posted was 84 21 6 934 961 on the close up of the label so was the top one on the list - 3rd generation.

>84 21 6 934 961 end of life 03/04 3rd generation

Now I know it is possible to flash these if you have the relevant tools and images - but I have no idea where you can get them from so I wouldn't consider it a DIY operation, it took me long enough to track down who could reflash my MOST one.

So the 'latest version' ebay one is probably a reflashed version which could be ok, or as you say he could be a lying scamming ebayer just trying to get a sale.

I'm just regurgitating information from other posts I found when doing the search on upgrading mine - So I only know as much as I've found and can't vouch for the accuracy!

bluetooth exchange are for the MOST touchscreen ones like mine - they are 2005 upwards. They upgraded mine - very quick service.

That would be great, except that service is only for the later models (04 onwards), not the pre-non-touchscreen stuff.
