Wales 2003 Range Rover SE Td6 Zambezi Silver
Gearbox and TC testing/advice

A couple of years ago I had a refurbished gearbox fitted to my TD6. (This was by an auto gearbox specialist). It came with a 12 month warranty. After about 6 months the gearbox started to play up so they replaced it with another refurbed unit. Now, a year or so later and I am getting occasional signs of TC shudder around 30-35 mph when driving. I know I only had 12 months warranty, but I think a couple of dodgy fixes should give me some recourse, after all I doubt I have done 10,000 miles since the original repair. (I do remember them saying that they didn't refurb the gearbox themselves but get them supplied elsewhere)

My dilemma is: Should I go back to the original repairer to get it looked at? Or should I get a different expert/specialist to diagnose what the problem is first, before confronting them?

If it's just the TC that needs sorting I guess I am prepared to bite the bullet. But if the second refurbed gearbox is knackered I think I would be justified in kicking up a fuss.

BTW Anyone know a decent gearbox specialist in North Wales or the North West to get an independent assessment?

Cheers in advance No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

Was the TC changed or refurbed along with the box?
I wouldn't expect the original company to sort a failed TC under warranty if it was something they never renewed/refurbed.

Presumably the torque converter was replaced (the symptom) but not the worn valve block (the cause). The replacement torque converter then fails much faster than the original one because it’s operating at reduced pressures right from the start. The re-manufacturer relies on it lasting just long enough to be outside of the warranty period.

What he says is unfortunately very true, I've fallen foul of a gearbox rebuild that didn't involve the valve block and my box is shagged after 22K........

FYI I have just replaced the TC and had the valve block done, and my box is still stuffed, so it's a rebuild for me Crying or Very sad Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Sadly Phil, I suspected that it may be the case that refurbs are often bodged and made to last only for the warranty. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

Thanks for replies guys.

What I am really after is somebody who can tell me if the whole box is goosed and or do I just need a new TC and valve block? I obviously don't want to go to the original garage.

Any suggestions of places to go for independent advice? The car drives well and I can normally reduce any shudder when it occurs by careful use of the accelerator. So I don't mind driving a bit of a distance. I live in Wrexham btw. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

I think that you'll find that once the TCC has worn it will take the rest of the gearbox with it Sad If you get your box rebuilt insist on the valve block getting the Sonnex treatment, cos without it you'll end up where we are now Big Cry Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
