That twin row angular contact ball bearing is only used in the RWD versions of the 5HP24 where it is required to take the plunge loads from the propshaft.
It isn't used in the three variants of the 5HP24 that are bolted up to transfer cases i.e. the 029 model for the E53 4.4i, the 032 model for the Range Rover 4.4 and the 034 model for the E53 4.6iS. The output from the transmission is simply a splined shaft that engages in the input shaft of the transfer box.

You will see that the model number on the green plate is 1058 000 032

The component that looks like a large bearing in the centre of the stator is actually a one-way clutch (or mechanical diode) that only allows the stator to turn in one direction.
When the speed ratio across the converter is low the stator is locked to the casing via this sprag clutch so that it redirects the hydraulic flow in the converter circuit to multiply torque. Once the converter gets to its coupling point (at round about 0.85 speed ratio i.e. 15% slip) the flow impinges on the back of the blades and the sprag clutch automatically allows the stator to freewheel so that it doesnt get in the way of the flow circuit which would reduce the converters efficiency. It can no longer multiply torque from this point so the coupling just behaves as a fluid flywheel. Apart from three axial needle roller bearings to handle the thrusts from the stator and turbine (shown in yellow), thats it for roller bearings inside the torque converter. Because the torque converter casing (i.e. impeller) is bolted to the engine flex plate, and is radially located through a spigot into the end of the crankshaft, outside of the torque converter there is just a single needle roller bearing on the oil pump drive tube to steady it :

Just a thought.... could it be worn out clutch plates on first / second gear? Only from what I can gather it's all OK in 3,4,and 5..... Shorely if it was a bearing then it would whine all the time? Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

That looks like the inside of the E-clutch hub and you certainly wouldnt expect to see scoring in there.
What does the E-clutch piston look like?
So what happened with your transmission between May 2015 and March 2016? Phil Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated ![]() |
