Check the oil breather pipes at the top of the engine at the back under the cover - they start to break down and need replaced from time to time. Plenty on here about checking and replacing them. Current Fleet:-

I wouldn't power wash the engine, I have heard bad things about doing it and causing all sorts of electrical problems |

Jet washed my engine on a regular basis with no covering anything up, waded on even more occasions.... never had an issue, alternator is sealed, no dizzy cap.... all sensitive elec bits are in a sealed box...what's left to not like a bit of water?? Pete

well you carry on as it works for you, but as i said i have heard of people having issues, you have a loom going to all the injectors and just about everything has a sensor and not an electrical issue but there are quite a few hoses and vacuum pipes around the rear of the engine that are fragile on the 4.4 v8 which lead straight into the cam covers and sump which probably wouldn't appreciate high pressure water blasted into them to mix with your engine oil. All i said was i wouldn't do it, i dont think its against the law, just the vehicles are fussy enough when it comes to electrics and being riddled with ECU's. |

Had another look today and the driver side of the engine is wet-ish pretty much all the way up so I think it is the rocker cover that is causing the issue. I took a more gentle approach and sprayed that side of the engine with one of those degreasers and then washed off with the garden hose. Biggest problem is access to spray it and trying to see enough afterwards, pretty short on space down there |

Cam covers are a very common fail as are the PCV valve pipes shown in the photos, this is when i was having a 'tinker' with my transmission. I changed mine a while back and there are a few instructional write ups on here and BMW forums and also the beisan systems site has some info as the cam covers are removed when the vanos repair is carried out.

Pretty sure the problem people have had with that is down to condensation or something similar... The first 1/2 dozen times I washed it I blew the surplus water off with an air line, then opened the plug and it was bone dry inside.. maybe some have failed seals or something but I never found water in mine after washing or wading.... Gone through just about every other plug under there and found no water ingress into anything... There are no exposed breathers that would allow water into the oil, if jetwashing damages a pipe then the pipe needed changing anyway... The only problem I have had with water was the starter that was on it when I got it, it failed a few months after deep wading, water got in it via the front bearing, it looked like a cheap recon starter with an unprotected bearing, the quality refurbished replacement had a sealed bearing and has been fine since.... I'm not doubting people have had trouble with water under the bonnet but that could be because they don't dry it off properly after washing, mine gets blown off with an air line then I leave the engine ticking over for at least 30 mins to get some heat into it... I hate working on dirty engines so wash it quiet a lot... it also helps to spot trouble early... and lets face it mine is usually covered in mud, not just the normal bit of road grime...
