see plenty breaking it , but I still wouldn't tow a sizeable caravan/trailer without mirrors.
after all if your to blame for an accident, insurance is void, and for the price of a set of mirrors, is it worth it.

I agree - when I had to tow a distance I fitted mirrors, even though I didn't find them particularly useful

Depends what you toe, personaly not into tin tents but do toe a boat and other trailers, don't find I need any additional mirrors.

Bet there are more peeps with post 98 licences breaking the law and towing more then combined 3500kg

Agree - it depends on the trailer - it's about visibility, not just because you're towing

That's cos there is no way on this earth a Jeep TJ is wider than a Range Rover, so you can see past it.... trust me when the trailer is a SOLID 8 foot wide you see

I imagine that a boat is not too bad without extended mirrors cos you ain't exactly level with the widest bit.... it does some what taper the nearer to the road it gets....

The OP was asking cos he's just acquired a covered car trailer, they are as wide as you can legally get on the UK roads @ 8 foot 2 inches, give or take a millimeter the only thing that you will see in your mirrors is the front of the trailer. If memory serves me right the law says that you must be able to the rear of the trailer and 30 degrees to the side, there is no mention of a physical width, because that will differ depending on how long the trailer is, It's 30 degrees.

And seeing that the treasury are keen to get revenue, and it's not just the Police, VOSA have joined in with the lets penalise the motorist and not having the correct mirrors is a £1000 mistake, is it really worth it? Also how will you feel when you've just backed your new 30K tin tent or even more expensive boat in to a post, or worse SWMBO's car  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

I think we got Trantorman his answer, then got slightly off topic about whether extended mirrors were a legal requirement for towing....

You can see on my boat picture that I had fitted Milenco Grand Aeros for that - I would always err on the side of caution

I use Grand Aeros and having just changed vans from a 7ft 6 wide to 8ft they are now essential especially if you want to pull out to pass on dual carriageways.

Yes I do tow a load of crap

I generally tow with mirrors the only time I don't is when the trailer is the same width as the car, in fact there are times where I've had to fit extended mirrors because the trailer was too narrow to be seen in the cars mirrors

First open window and fit your static cling to the door.... I use a light spray of widow cleaner or water to promote adhesion
