SQL, the 3.6 & the SC are so very close in performance that I’m sure you would have not been disappointed in either... BUT, over in the UK the SC is considerably cheeper to buy & if you can afford the running cost of the petrol, a real option as they get older and the reliability thing gets more of a consideration... Thumbs Up

They re not similar in performance at all the SC has tons more power a tiny bit less low down torque but so much the better engine.

The 4.4 diesel is more comparable but still lacks the top end of the SC

depends on the vehicle as most are remapped and can match and still return 20 mpg plus, mines closer to 360bhp now and nothing like a standard Thumbs Up _____________________________________________________

Just posted on another thread about this but can add , I had an 480 bhp Imprezza and it had stunning acceleration BUT until I had anti lag fitted , you had to treat the clutch with tremendous abuse to get it off the corners , the anti lag cured this but caused so many other issues it was a very expensive cure , like wise my R1 can be short shifted in the next wall of torque while keeping the rear tyre from spinning and still drive forward

A SC might get a grin on your face but at what cost compared to a diesel

Awesome, we did six weeks and 13000km last summer in our FFRR TD6. Ping me if you want some tips =)

20 you get 20mpg from you diesel and i very much doubt with a remap your anywhere near 360bhp, but lets say you are.

I get 20mpg on my SC with 400 ponies and no messing around, the fact i also run LPG mean i get closers to 30 mpg in fuel cost terms, have more torque, more power and a better overall drivability.

Theres nothing wrong with the diesel i drove all the model before buying, but lets not try and pretend they are the same as the v8 petrol's especially to the SC model because they just aren't, they are excellent motors and great if you want to cruise motorways all day and get a little more MPG, but they are not the same as the premium engine, the top of the line engine the SC.

Its you choice what you buy, but after driving them all there really is only one that is amazing to drive thats the SC.

On the power side the 4,2 sc is way ahead of the 3.6 but on torque the 3.6 is a bit ahead and I think that's what matters to some. Obviously the power equates to 2.5 quicker to 60 and that's fun. For me , and that's all I can say , real world driving the 3.6 is the way to go , with a remap your talking a huge increase ( + 30 % ) on the torque figure which would be very close to a 4.2 sc in a lot of situations and even the 5.0 sc can't match the standard 3.6 torque all be it by a small margin

I'm having mine mapped soon and the mapper ( auto tune ) has told me a bhp increase of about 50 - 60 but the torque will be increased by a third ( 640 Nm to 830 Nm ) and in his opinion is the engine ( 3.6 ) in a very mild state of ECU tune
He also mentioned an increase in MPG , we will see

Again , each to his own , a lot the the L405 posters seem to prefer the V6 to the V8 and I can't understand that !!!!!

Speed is relative and a 10k bog standard R1 will out accelerate almost anything 2015 4.4 AB

Had 3.6TDV8 for 4 years now, only had minor problems and I expect I would have had similar issues if I had bought a petrol.
I do about 6K miles a year. Good RR, but wouldn't recommend it if you have a short commute of less than 10 miles, as it can take a while for the engine to heat up. 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

Unnecessary quote removed

I agree but each to there own, but its silly for people to keep saying the 4.2sc and the 3.6 are similar or close because they are not, different fuel, different tech and different induction systems, you have to take into account the drivability of an SC over a turbo induction, yes torque can be tuned a little higher in the 3.6 for a very small part of the rev range, and they are great cars had one on test drive for a week, but then drive the SC and you will see the difference.

its like saying if i tune my 4.2sc it will be the same as the 5.0sc its just not true.

If i remapped my 4.2sc and changed the SC fully i could get anther 50 to 100 bhp and more torque so if your going to compare do it like for like, the standard 3.6 and the standard 4.2 are very different in terms of the sc has more torque and more power simple as.

Hi Lighthouse where are you getting your figures from ? A remap on a 3.6 is 250 stg Again this is just my humble opinion and I'm not try to convince anyone just give some published facts re the torque figures , un mapped and mapped Obviously if I've read the figures wrong then fair enough but I e just checked again on Wikipedia and it also states the 3.6 has more torque than the sc. 4.2 and 5.0 , either way you like the sc and so do lots of people This post was about someone asking which one people thought was preferred

The 3.6 diesel is the best by far and remapped it's not even worth discussing Laughing 2015 4.4 AB

Agree everyone is entitle to there view.

But you can not compare a modified car with an un modified one, you should compare like for like and like for like the SC will always be the better engine.

As standard

3.6 - 268bhp 640nm torque 0-60 8.6 seconds
4.2 - 400bhp 560nm torque 0-60 7.1 seconds

so as i said standard like for like the SC have over 50% more horse power and is a little down on torque, its way quicker to 60 and has a higher top speed.

If you start modifying both you can achieve more for each engine but the SC will always we more like for like. For example a slight remap of the SC will see 460bhp and 650nm of torque.

It all depends on what you want and can afford to run really, but if you want the best its an SC, thats what everyone really wants just some can't afford the running costs and want to pretend they have something as good.

Im just trying to give best advice possible having driven all the variants the SC is the best engine, autobiography is best spec.

Now we are getting into the region where the average "newest" 3.6 will have north of 60k on it then the supercharged makes sense reliability wise, and it makes a nice noise. And I'm a diesel nerd Rolling Eyes

That said there are a lot of 3.6 around which run peachy with good 6 digit milage a on them.

Interestingly the 4.4 is very similar performance wise to the 4.2 sc. 0-60 is in the ballpark, and I'm sure that if you stuck them down a drag strip the sc would probably win but not by much! Can't find any 1/4 mile times for the diesel.

The 5.0 is off into the next county performance wise compared to the others! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I feel that's it's getting a little off topic here and I didn't realise that I really wanted a SC but won't admit it. LOL could you give me the lotto numbers please or is it only Diesel Range Rover owners minds you can read. Laughing

Thank you for getting the correct figures and of course your apology for claiming the wrong figures is accepted , dont even mention it Laughing

I will however point out that while the almost 2 seconds you save to 60 is fun , is the real world the SC holds no attraction for me ( shocker ) I love the torque and the diesel is tops there.

I have bowed to your mind reading skills re want we really want ( no means no ) but me think you doth protest to much !!!

Having said all that , if I was to have any choice , money no object and someone else to stand pumping in the go juice ........... I'd buy SDV8 and a vanquish for when I needed speed ..... and comfort

( must have been hard reading those torque figures !!!!!! And the 3.6 beats even the really fast 5.0 as well )

All joking aside , I would admit that if fuel costs weren't an issue a 5.0 sc might be attractive because they are seriously quick but for me , the advantage of the diesel 3.6 outweighs the marginal speed diff compared to the 4.2'sc

Enjoy your car because at the end of the day it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks , if you think it's best for you then it is

Ummmm NO sir... the Autobiography in simply terms is NOT the best spec sir, You are referring to the era of the 3.6 & 4.2SC so 05-09my and the Autobiography of that era was simply an upgrade to any spec of 322 to make it “yours”

So, in simple terms an Autobiography of that era could have been a Vogue or a Vogue SE so, an Autobiography based on a Vogue may well have less spec than a standard Vogue SE...

Just making things crystal clear for the OP Thumbs Up
