Gut feeling: yes, I think a throttle body is sticking.

Diesels do have them now, some of the functions being to shut off the air supply when the engine turns off so that it doesn't over run. Another is to throttle down the inlet air when the EGR opens up, so that the engine draws in from the EGR at the right amount.

When it comes to throttle bodies and MAF parts, my experience from petrol and diesel engines is to buy a genuine part from landrover directly ... its worth the additional cost , as I've tried to save money in the past by buying equivalent parts from online, which has turned out never to work properly. The reason being that these parts need to be quite exacting in their specs and outputs for the engine ECU to be happy, and aftermarket ones sometimes fall just outside those specs, causing more problems cause the ECU thinks there are errors ... or is getting a false reading, and adapting to it, making the fuelling incorrect. . V8 or else ...

Time to find them and pull them off, do you think a clean up might be enough to free it off? It does make sense for it to be that.

Looking at the part numbers it seems that the throttle bodies are the same each side. If they are easy to get to (haha!) I could swap them over and see if the fault moves to the other side

Couldn't agree more re using genuine parts. The new sensors fitted are all genuine.

Stripped the air intake manifold off the top of the engine last night and inspected the throttle bodies, both move freely and move back smoothly to the fully open position, I think we can therefore rule that easy fix out (also have no throttle body related codes)

Next thoughts EGR valve broken up. If the end of the valve was broken the car would still think it was working correctly even if it is jammed. A jammed EGR would explain the low intake of air on that side compared to the others and also explain the higher temperature on that bank as the gasses will be exhaust gas not fresh air.

EGR removal tonight to inspect

Have to say getting to the EGR's was no where near as difficult as I was expecting (famous last words) just need to be methodical with removing the wiring

Just to conclude this in case anyone has similar symptoms in the future

the head of the EGR valve had come off the end of the valve stem, looks like an appalling design to me!

Explains why no EGR faults as the valve stem was moving around freely

when you say that the head of the EGR valve had come off can you explain more

Also did this clear the P0113-17 fault code ?? Regards

The flat end of the valve that seals around the valve seat (they look like an exhaust/inlet valve) had come adrift from the stem of the valve. The stem is moved in and out by an electric motor controlled by the ECU

Yes it cleared my fault code and the car has never run rough at idle since

Could you see the problem with the EGR’s still in place with the pipework connected or did they have to be removed completely to diagnose the problem please?

Here is a picture which will hopefully make it clearer. There is no way of telling until the valve is removed (or at least disconnected from the exhaust end and tilted up)

I think it took me 2.5 hours to remove and 2 hours to refit. Could probably be done quicker but this was my first foray into working on the TDV8 so was all new to me

I am having a very similar challenge with my 4.4 tdv8 going into restricted performance. It is showing very similar codes relating to the maf and EGR!
