Detachable Tow bar

Another question Smile

I decided to take the tow bar off today as I don't plan on using it (yet) - I found the red keys in the boot but they wouldn't go into the lock at first. Likewise, I couldn't turn the knob clockwise (I discovered this before reading the manual and thought it was seized!)
A bit of WD40 and a tiny screwdriver to prise the lock aperture cover open and I managed to get the key in. I can now turn the knob clockwise, but it only pulls out slightly.
The handbook says insert key, pull out and turn clockwise and the bar will drop out. Now, since I've loaded it with WD40, I can now turn the knob without the key - is this right? If not, I'm guessing that the tumblers inside the lock are now stuck in the unlocked position, probably due to me semi-forcing the key in Sad
Worried that the tow bar will now either (a) drop off or, (b) be stolen, I've unbolted the housing from the chassis and removed the lot until I can figure out how to fix it.
The handbook isn't that clear in it's explanation of how it works - so, in short, my question is: can the knob be still turned clockwise without the key inserted and/or is the key there just to enable the thing to be pulled out?

Come on guys- can someone nip out to their car and just check to see if that knob can be turned and/or pulled out without the key please!

I've found a plastic grommet on the tow bar, covering a circlip. Might have to be a strip down job later if no-one can assist.

I'd love to noddy - but made the mistake of assuming that detachable towbars were de rigeur on the Vogue, and bought mine not realising the contrary - no towbar... Censored

Sorry I can't be of any help dude! Embarassed

Noddy, despite a broken hand I am going to try and find an answer for you on my car later today.

Hope the wife doesn't see me trying, she'll go mental! Discovery 4 HSE

Checked mine today and here goes:

No key in the knob will turn, but only about 10mm, the red marker on the knob will be at the bottom of the green marker on the hitch.

Insert key and turn it 1/2 a turn clockwise.

You will now be able to pull the knob out and turn it clockwise until the hitch drops out.

Hope that helps.
