Hi Guys as you can see I am new here and i would like to ask several questions about the Range Rover L322.

So currently I drive a 2002 110 Defender, great piece of kit however i miss my creature comforts and miss the auto box!!

I would like to know whats the better RR, it will be something that I use everyday, and do the odd green lane and perhaps camping on the Strata Florida up in Wales twice a year. I have asked several questions about the TDV8 from various people and also the TD6 but want the opinions of current owners to tell me whats best. MPG doesn't bother me however not sure I could ever go down the Petrol route. Oh and i don't want a Sport as i need a big boot

My budget would be a Maximum of £20000 preferably with LR service History. Can you please help!!

If you are not bothered about consumption why on earth would you not get a petrol.It is far quieter than the 'Tractor' Diesel !

Coming from a Defender, you may find the performance of the TD6 acceptable - I found it dire - the TDV8 is significantly quicker & more torquey - you really need to drive both - but your budget its putting you well into good TDV8 territory - so the question should be more like can you stretch to a 4.4 or will you have to make do with a 3.6

Personally if your going up strata and thinking of any offroad stuff save money and get a td6 or SC under £10k.

Ignore full LR history as they only do what's specifically on the service task and not anything preventative at all...

If it's got Indy stamps I'd personally be happier 👍

If you spend £20k and something lets go and warranty doesn't cover it your kinda stuffed.
If you keep a good chunk back Sod's law is you'll likely never need it but it's there in a good savings account waiting 👍

Spend £8-9.5k on a good facelift td6, then a £600 for a total all fluids change.
Another £60 on an egr blank kit, €200 on the gearbox remap and enjoy.

If the box goes spend £1k on the Sonax valve block and new torque converter on a rebuilt box.

I suppose what i really what to know is what kind of problems do you get with them and how easy are they to work on?

With regards to the supercharged- i don't think 17mpg is worth it when that's the combined mpg!!

17 mpg combined in your dreams! 22 mpg on a motorway run and lucky to get 14 around town! Previous cars:

You are definitely into tdv8 territory at 20K, and performance wise that is the better option, its faster, torquier, and in the real world if not more efficient then at least as efficient as the td6.

But even at 20K for a nice example you could be looking at potential issues with alternators, and suspension parts and if you are unlucky the turbos. So personally I would still look for a TDV8 but maybe dial back the budget for repairs to say 16K put 4k into a FF Fund, which will cover most things letting go.

There are a fair few about at that sort of level and you should be able to get a nice one. The milage is less relevant than condition and history, so make sure it has had all it its fluids changed regularly, budget for swapping the Diff, transfer box, gearbox oils and filter and also changing the brake fluids and coolant, and you should be good to go. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I just switched back to a 4.2 sc after driving a Defender for a year (previously had a P38) so here are some thoughts from a recent convert:

1) After driving a Defender any Engine whether diesel or petrol is going to be quiet. I tried both the tdv8 and the petrol sc and I didnt find the diesel to be tractor like at all. It has a great v8 burble and feels refined.

2) Probably the best thing about the Defender is its torque - that effortless pull. They may not be fast but they pull like a train. I'll be honest and say I'm a bit disappointed by my sc - I dont feel like it has anything like the pulling power that the defender had. The sc just shifts up the gears rather impressing you with low end grunt. The sc is fast as hell once its wound up but you need the right roads to be able to enjoy its speed.

If I could start over again I think Id buy the 3.6 tdv8. Look for something aroun 17k and keep 3k in reserve.
