Might expect it on a higher milage box which has towed regularly, in which case ZF recommend that the transmission fluid is changed every 60k, however on that sort of milage there should be no problems with the fluid, though some do like a precautionary filter and fluid drop at about 40k to prevent any trouble.

I would kick off and get LR involved. Ryan on the LR CRC part of the forum is a decent place to start, he helped me out when the dealer dragged it feet about a new upper tailgate. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

My (2012 TDV8) gearbox was replaced under warranty because 2 litres of gearbox fluid had leaked out at the join to the engine. There was no message or sign of damage, but I was told that LR policy was to replace in such circumstances (as RRPhil says the approach is to replace whole units rather than repair). I suppose there might have been some damage to the face of the gearbox which would have prevented proper fitting in future, but that was not mentioned, so my understanding was the replacement was precautionary due to the fluid having been insufficient for a period of a few days and, I think, under 100 miles. This was in the context of a demonstrator with 4500 miles which I had owned for eight days. The decision to replace was made without any pressure from me, though I did have to apply pressure through the dealer and LR Customer Relations when I was told that such gearboxes were on back order and there was no indication when one might be available.

If it was policy to replace in those circumstances, I am surprised that it is not policy to replace in this case, which seems to me to have at least as much potential for damage within the gearbox (though I have no expertise with gearboxes). I suppose if it is a defective filter and the warning stopped things being made worse, replacement of fluid and filter might be enough, but if the filter is clogged with debris then I would want the cause to be investigated and, with the gearbox being a major component, one would hope the warranty would cover it. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Well, phone call today from dealership saying that they have changed the transmission filter and oil and that Landrover technical have have said to return the car to me as they are not prepared to authorise any further work or investigation at this stage. They have allegedly dissected the old filter and there are no traces of metal swaf/filings/shrapnel etc etc

Of course I have to be slightly cynical in that the warranty finishes in a couple of months. and surely they wouldn't be daft enough to try and defer an £8k box swap out until after the warranty had expired??

But who knows - maybe it will be fine.

This is a real tail of woe. RRPhil's comment about taking the issue to ZF seems a good move to me. Its a pity its so difficult to be part of the rectification / investigation process first hand with dealers and everything they say has to be taken as the truth without any evidence to show for it.

Surly if a component has a 9 year service life by direction of the vehicle supplier and it only lasts 4 years - its not fit for purpose especially as its only done 40K miles.

This is not one I would drop I have to be honest.

If works are not warranty works - where do we stand in being able to claim the old parts back? Bit late now I know but just wondered.

Allegedly LR technical have spoke to ZF about my box and that it is their recommendations just to change the filter/Oil

i have been quite forceful with the dealership but they are adamant there is nothing more they can do. The dealership have refused to give me anykind of case number for ZF saying that any communication is between them and LR and of no business of mine.

If the car is working as it should and you are being told by the dealer and LR that nothing more is on offer, it is hard to do anything else without having the gearbox dismantled and inspected at your own expense. I wouldn't do that.

You might consider writing to the dealer and LR saying that you remain concerned but will rely on their expertise, however should the gearbox fail within (say) a year/12,000 miles (assuming normal use within warranty conditions) you would expect them to treat the failure as having been caused by the issues that arose within the warranty period and be for them to repair without additional cost to you and invite them to agree to that in order to settle matters. Only Range Rovers since 1988

I don't know enough on gearboxes to comment but I think at the very least, you should contact Ryan on here re the issue.

He was very helpful to me when the Main Dealer said my upper tailgate would not be covered under the paint corrosion warranty. A few days later I git a call from the dealer asking me to bring the car in for a full new replacement tailgate.!

It can do no harm to ask him for his advice on this and he seems to be able to smooth the ways if need be. Ash

Well, no doubt I'll regret saying this but fingers crossed, the flush and new filter and oil appears to have fixed the problem. - Done quite a few journeys riding the box hard (Coooerrrr! ) to make sure it gets hot - and no sign of the message coming back.
