Avin Avant-2 Head Unit swap 2003 FFRR

I've read pretty much all there is to read about head unit swaps in the forums -- and they all seem a bit of a drama to me (I really do not dig the fiddly stuff -- though I'd have loved it when I was 16!) Like everyone else, I want to retain the clock and the computer functionality, but want to upgrade from the dated Infotainment system.

On another forum, someone gave cursory mention to the Avin Avant-2:
https://avinusa.com/bmw-e46-avant2-full-android-multimedia-navigation-system.html
It's certainly pricey -- but if it works and it is a plug and play gig, I'll be happy to pay for it! There is a nice video of it being spoken about here:
[color=bluehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9NbanNb7JU[/color]
but it is in Turkish -- and I don't speak Turkish (it really does look like a nice install, though).

So, clearly it can be done -- but is it a plug and play? Anyone know? The website doesn't really mention Range Rovers, and though I have emailed the company, I have not yet heard anything back. “The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.”

Australia 2007 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Java Black

Shedlock2000, This looks pretty expensive and no different to the units fitted by myself and others.
If you have a mid unit now with no amp it will be plug and play.
If you have a mid unit with factory amp ( like me) it will be plug and play with a bit of wire swapping and loss of steering wheel controls.
If you have a vogue with DSP amp and sat Nav. All existing must go and new unit and 5mtr loom fitted.
With the mid unit you can re fit into the glove box quite easily.
A fair bit of cutting to the existing dash cage is needed for a good fit of the new head unit or the dash top wont fit properly
The one I got is still on sale at US$270 shipped, Android kit kat 4.4 and high def screen plus reversing cam.
A couple of threads give very detail how to`s if you search.

Just a few things that I've noticed.........
1 you need the E39 not the E46 to fit it in a ffrr
2 that don't half look like a Chinese head unit that's been re-named (order enough from china and they'll call it what you want Wink )

As for is it plug and play..... yes, if you don't have a screen in your ffrr, and just as much messing about if you do have a screen Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

South Africa 2003 Range Rover HSE Td6 Zambezi Silver

I purchased the Avant (https://avinusa.com/bmw-5-series-e39-x5-e53-avant2-full-android-multimedia-navigation-system.html) at a whopping USD 799.00 believing that it might the best unit around and also because Erisin could not find my country (Namibia) to ship the unit to.

It needed a lot of wire cutting and I have not resolved all the issues yet (went on holiday in the meanwhile and returned exhausted). I still need to connect the reverse camera and illumination connection. In order to get proper sound, I installed an amp an sound quality is reasonable now (still not as good as the original, but way better than without an amp).

I have lost the controls on the steering wheel - which is disappointing. Avin responded that they only have ONE CANBUS that works ALL BMW's and that was the end of there support on this matter.

The most frustrating experience however is that the ODB2 feature does not work at all. It gets a Bluetooth connection, but does not provide any live data. My decision to purchase this unit was based on getting proper real-time information from the ODB2 unit.

I would not recommend this unit - rather go for a cheaper unit

That appears to be a slightly upgraded Erisin unit, the can-bus box is identical as well as the leads and other peripherals, I doubt for one second it will be plug and play and you won't retain clock and computer function either...

The cheap one I fitted is very good for the price and is pretty easy to fit....

The computer lies through it's teeth anyway and you can reset the clock by pulling the fuse... not a great hassle..... Pete

Pete, if you go to the bother of reading the installation pdf. they move the midi control panel in to the glovebox, wonder where that idea came from Shocked But they don't recommend it if you have a nav screen.... now i might be wrong, but I think that the X5 has an even smaller glovebox than the ffrr, so that could explain that Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Just a small add, My new unit worked with the canbus steering wheel controls fine before I connected the amp up. I had to disconnect the steering wheel inputs as it caused the head unit screen to go blank Question If you had a mid unit with no amp I presume all would work. 2007 TDV8 VSE
