Aesthetics aside, I'd be worried about the larger size creating a dirt trap. The smaller plate allows hosed water to sluice behind and a small bit of movement and flex to dislodge any nasties. The larger size also prevents air circulation much more than the standard size.

If you use the correct pads to stick the back plates down getting water around the back is no issue.
When screwed on unless a spaces is used the gap is very hard unless you direct a hose around the edges of it... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

When I bought my car the n/plates were stuck by pads. A couple of months later (July time), I was caught in heavy traffic stop / start moving slowly with the sun behind me. Unknown to me the rear plate fell off I only realised it back at the house .
Jumped in the other car and retraced my steps and found it, went to my local main dealer and got some new plates made up and fitted on with screws / top hat bushes.
The rear n/plate location has 2 punched square holes in the outer skin, the top hat bushes press into these and the screws go in them. There is about a 2-3mm gap between back of plate and the car. The front ones screw directly into the plastic bumper.
Would I ever use sticky pads again? NEVER!!!, but like with most things, its down to personal choice.

Mine you can see the screw and is the correct way hence LR put holes there to accept same, I added 2mm thick nylon washers to the rear to create a nice air gap and spider refuge grrrr  Many thanks

Is there not a legal stance on plate size, there seems to be a rule for every other aspect of displaying number plates ! Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

I don't know about a legal size requirement for number plates but I do know the OP's number plate isn't legal insofar as it doesn't display the manufactures name and postcode and the relevant BS number.
A picky mot tester might well fail such a car because of it.

There is only a legal rule re minimum size and font details.

Re detail on the bottom any normal mot person wouldn't even bother with such trivia, my cars and bikes have been this way for years. Many thanks

You might consider it trivia but unfortunately the rules have changed recently and the number plate is now part of the mot. According to my well informed mot tester your plate is certainly a potential fail.

i dont want to 'handbag' the issue, but......not only is ScottyRR's plate mis-spaced, 2. it has a car make and not a uk/euro flag, 3. it has not got the plate makers postcode, 4. it has no BS symbol. (british standard) -and 5. they spelt 'autobiography' without the 'H' so, the only thing that's good for it, is, - its not upside down!
we can choose to do what we want with our cars, -but we should all be aware of the consequences, and the rules.

It is trivia even petty, just use a sensible mot tester who does all the important things, when was the last time people had there spare wheel checked, very few no doubt.
You pays your money and takes your choice.
