Also known as a "Farmers Hitch". They sometimes come up for sale on the forum. John

I have noticed the same, it is slightly low for a trailer to sit totally level, but said the adjustable farmers hitch will sort it. It fits into the armature in place of the detachable receiver so you don't need to change the whole caboodle just remove the pun and knock out the detachable receiver and put the farmers in its place. It is also a removable part too with a pin and clip to retain it. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

How low is the trailer though? Trailers are supposed to have a slightly nose down attitude, it helps stability when towing. (according the Ifor Williams' guide to towing)

I bought mine from PF Jones via ebay. It came with a towing ball fitted to the towing plate, a carry case for it, a 7 pin prewired socket and mounting plate (XPF027B2M).

There are actually 3 different versions of the farmers hitch - I've had 2 of them - due to me leaving one in my shed in France and coming home without it

What was the socket for? That should already be attached to your main towing armature under the car.
The PF jones one i linked to is the one with the pin, rather than a bolt. incidentally the middle hole on the hitch is the standard height (which all modern trailers are built to), it's about the same as the quick release ball height. |

If you're removing it when not in use, then I also recommend a KYB000011 plug for the square armature - available from Dan |

The ffrr hitch is too low full stop, and there is no height difference between the swan neck and the 'Multi hole' farmers hitch in height. For some inexplicable reason the the adjustable hitch goes down rather than up I had to resort to a ladder hitch to get the correct height to comply with EU height regulations, it's supposed to sit at 18", the multi hole on the top setting was just over 16", how L/R get away with this is beyond me..... and then I thought that I'd put the hitch on upside down...... but it's too bloody short and fouls the bumper

I had one of those, took me all day to get it off. Had to use a bottle jack! Against the armature, so yes, put a bit of grease on it. I thought latter if I drilled the shaft, , it could go in upside down. I got myself a swan neck, and now I don't plough the car parks or soft grass verges. As I've said before, you can buy 50mm box section 5mm thick, and make your own, via eBay... (with the help of an arc welder). |
