OZ holiday

Im off to Australia at the end of March and intend hiring a 4x4 in the Brisbane area so I can take off road etc.
Just wondering if there was any locals or anyone on the forum who could recommend where to hire from. Very Happy

You'd better confirm that you can take it off road. A lot of companies won't allow that.

You might also need to get a mining-spec vehicle - it wlll have a bull bar (and a flashing amber light on top Smile )

Budget say this about their mine-spec vehicles:

Mine-spec vehicles are available to hire with the following options:

Engineered Roll Over Protection Systems
Load Guards
Starter Motor Isolation/Jump Start Receptacle Kits
High Lights
Reverse Alarms
UHF and Digital Radios
In Vehicle Management System (IVMS)
Safety Equipment - Mine Flag, Warning Triangles, Wheel Chocks, Internal Ropes, First Aid Kit, Wheel Nut Indicators and Fire Extinguishers
Reflective Safety Tape and Call Sign Decals Ron B. VK2OTC

It depends what kind of 'off road' you intend on doing.

For instance, many roads can be dirt and could be corrugated if not graded recently with camping spots, beauty spots, hotels, roadhouses, etc off the main track. That's what we did when we did the Gibb River Road a few years ago.

For that, I agree, you'll need something with two spare wheels, bars, etc. Don't take chances out there.

If it's just the beach or a few loose tracks, then be really careful. Try and avoid going to places by yourself in case you get into trouble and check your insurance. Si. <This is my name.

Actually, check if you can even take it on a dirt road. I hired a car from Europcar and driving on dirt roads (not tracks!) was forbidden. Ron B. VK2OTC

thanks for the replies, the only off road I intend doing will be on Frazer Island and Rainbow beach, so probably wont need the full off road expo type vehicle, just a standard 4x4, like Toyota etc.
Anymore info is helpful. cheers Thumbs Up

There are a few companies that rent 4WDs for use on Fraser Island.

Some companies may frown on Rainbow Beach use. Google "Rainbow Beach 4wd Fails" in Google images Ron B. VK2OTC

Cheers for the info.
I have driven rainbow beach before some 23 years back, great place to have some fun.
I agree that problems can happen, but generally they are the ones that don't check tide times or put them self and passengers in danger!.
Was hoping for some local knowledge where to hire from, in the Brisbane area. Thumbs Up
