HELP. strange gearbox behaviour. Should I drive it?

My gearbox drives OK, but today I experienced a shudder driving in reverse. First I was on a steep driveway and had to drive away backwards. When putting in reverse, FF rolled forward instead of holding. Then when revving the car climbed rearwards with a shudder. It felt like a chain slipped over the gear 2 or 3 times and after that it drove quite normally backwards.
Had a gearbox overhaul last year (some 7000 km ago) because I had no reverse at all after arriving in Italy (1000 km) for holiday.. Big Cry FF on transport home Big Cry
Friday we are going on holiday again (about 2500 km to and forth). Can I drive it? Or am I going to ruin the gearbox completely? I really don't know what to do Question What do you experienced gearbox heroes think?

I know nothing about the td6 gearbox, but have heard of torque converter shudder/shimmer on this forum. like a 'cattle grid' sound. but what I think, is fluid level -as it happened when fluid may have not been pumped, when at a steep angle etc. I guess you could do no wrong, reading up on checking/filling the fluid level.

Thank you. Checked oil last week and checked this morning again; filled in another 300cc and nicely peeing out at 39C after shifting gears thoroughly. After that test drive: not a real difference Twisted Evil still feels like skipping one or two teeth (only in reverse) mostly when on steep and when revving. At idle reverse feels like normal on flat surface. When on gradient it needs more revs to get started and then the hesitation happens.
Help! Anyone out there some advice Question Can I make the holiday in this condition Question
Any suggestions much appreciated! Bow down

Yes it needs a replacement torque converter. Or whilst it is out you can do a complete rebuild.

TC replacement is £500 all in.

Overhaul is £1350 all in.

1. Tc (replacement is likely to be more like £900?!)
2. Low GBX Oil levels (but you have now checked that.)
3. Low tickover (poss due to dirty MAF or holes in pipes)Should be c.800 RPM?

GM torque converter rebuild is about £100 from vanmatic or jpat.

About 3 hours to remove and 4 hours back on.

It's impossible to get it upto £900 unless you're buying a new TC?

Are you holding on the brake until it is properly in gear, or going into reverse on the roll / hitting the power as soon as the lever is in position?

I had a very similar symptom pulling off forwards on a hill with the van on the back. I'd been caught napping at a set of lights, and threw her into drive and tried to pull away sharpish, and I don't think the gear was fully engaged. I've never had the same again, on steeper hills and with trailers, provided I let everything settle before applying power.

MW Car history includes: LR Series 3, RR Classic x 4, LR 101, Discovery 1 and 2 and now FFRR.

thanks for your replies.
Wonder if it could be TC. This was also a brand new last year (7000km).
I always come to a complete halt before changing gears. When on a hill I have brakes on until I feel it engages. On this steep hill I then release brake, and thats when it can't hold the car at spot; it just rolls down through engaged reverse gear. When revving up it starts moving backwards, not with a judder (cattle grid) but like it seems to skip some teeth as a chain on a bike.
tickover is just fine with 740RPM

Still wonder where to look and what to do with the holiday?

just thinking outside the box as it were, have you considered the transfer box could be the culprit, possibly a stretched chain in the transfer casing, I haven't seen the inside of the TD6 transfer case as it has the NV225 box on it rather than the Magna Steyr on the TDV8 and discos, but I seem to recall there can be instances of the chains stretching....

Just a thought, not saying it is this, but a replacement can be sourced here http://cobratransmission.com/np-225-chain-55129005-1 though I'm sure there are other places. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Really out of the box thinking Laughing No never thought of it being the transfer box. Might be worth getting in to that deeper. Do you think it is possible to drive the car for another 2 to 3 K km without extra damage? Can the transfer box handle it?

@ Rangie4fun, at the overhaul, did they CHANGE your oilcooler, or did they only flush? What are symptoms of transfer box failure? Northermonkey's suggestion about transfer box seems plausible to me. I only experience the problem when reversing...

Have a search generally online for NV225 failure there are a few articles out there where folks have had the chain stretch.

As I said it's just an idea, based on your description of feeling like a chain jumping a cog, might be something completely different though, as I'm not sure how the rolling/not holding factors in to it. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Were the wheels straight when you were reversing? I had a shudder / wheel skip which Craig thought might have been a stretched chain. Turned out to be water in the transfer box oil. It caused the central diff to partially lock up when it shouldn't have.

Only really manifested itself when turning with a hard lock. Ed
