4.4 engine won't start any ideas from this video clip

Hi All

Come out to go shopping today and got a problem with the engine starting, anybody got any clues to what could be causing this, starter seems to sound fine, but engine won't catch. I've checked on using my faultmate and there are no faults recorded in the ECU. Car had a new in tank fuel pump about a year ago, has started perfectly everytime till now. No warning signs was driving it all day yesterday.

Video clip of the engine trying to start

Engine is the BMW M62 4.4 V8

Sounds like a fuel issue to me . As you say it nearly wants to go ...

Can you measure fuel pressue with your faultmate? - Not sure if there's a fuse for the fuel pump itself?

good Luck!!

Simon

Does sound like a fueling issue rather than anything else as it's almost catching to run but not quite. Try some Easy Start or similar volatile spray in the intake.
If it confirms a fueling issue try the old trick of thumping the tank, might jar the pump back into life (stuck armature).

Was the pump a genuine replacement or pattern part?

If you have done the fuel pump, try finding the fuel pump relay in the boot area fuse box, and try switching it with another. In same fuse box etc.
As you are a master of elec-trickery, get the seat folded, and carpet back, and see if you do still have 12v to the fuel pump. It's on one tag, but there are about 5 to choose from. Can't remember from when I did mine.
From the clip, it sounds like you have just enough residual fuel pressure to get a dribble through the injectors.
Easy start into the plenum will prove it. Then you need to address the fuel pressure issue.
The fuel filter underneath could be blocked too. You could thump that before turning it over.

Gone out today, put the battery charger on as it was low because of all the trying to start it. Came back an hour later and just thought I would give it a go, engine started first time. Was a little lumpy at first but after about 10-15 seconds was purring away as normal no problems at all. Has started each time I have tried it now. No idea what could have caused it, my only inclination was maybe water in the fuel as the tesco I got the fuel from was closed the day before I filled up as they found water in the petrol tanks.

Anyone else think this could had caused the starting issue?

Tut tut, Tescos have been bulking up their chicken and ham for years with water. No wonder they give 5p a litre off!

Every little helps!
