Sounds like a fuel issue to me . As you say it nearly wants to go ...

Does sound like a fueling issue rather than anything else as it's almost catching to run but not quite. Try some Easy Start or similar volatile spray in the intake.

If you have done the fuel pump, try finding the fuel pump relay in the boot area fuse box, and try switching it with another. In same fuse box etc.

Gone out today, put the battery charger on as it was low because of all the trying to start it. Came back an hour later and just thought I would give it a go, engine started first time. Was a little lumpy at first but after about 10-15 seconds was purring away as normal no problems at all. Has started each time I have tried it now. No idea what could have caused it, my only inclination was maybe water in the fuel as the tesco I got the fuel from was closed the day before I filled up as they found water in the petrol tanks.

If so, time for a full dose of redex to flush out the tank before filling with ultimate high octane Current vehicles

Tut tut, Tescos have been bulking up their chicken and ham for years with water. No wonder they give 5p a litre off!
