Hello everyone newbie here

I've had a RRS before for about 5 years from new and although I liked it a lot I've always really fancied a L322.

My budget is only up to 15K but then it would only be used as a weekender as I drive a van all week and the wife won't drive such a beast (her words not mine).

I've been looking around for a couple of weeks and recently found what I considered to be a couple of beauties, both Vogue SE TDV8 models, one being late 2006 and the other late 2007, with all the twiddly bits I like but both are heading towards the 100K miles mark.

But here's the thing:
I mentioned my intentions to a chap I know who has been an engineer and mechanic for over 30 years and his first response was 'to not touch the TDV8 with a bargepole'.

One of the reasons for mentioning it to him is that I know he has a L322 of his own. He says his is the straight TD6 version (2006) and the decision to buy this was partly decided due to a family firm of land rover specialists he knows who said they see tons of problems with the TDV8 but hardly any with the BMW TD6 unit.

All comments would be very much appreciated.

Edit: I've also been reading a fair bit about gearbox problems on the TD6, again any comments or experiences appreciated.

Td6 is recognised as being almost bomb proof as an engine but the gearbox is known to be weak and the first thing to go c.100,000 miles

The tdv8 is a much smoother, better drive but again problems exist with EGR, turbos, pipes etc. if one has been treated well (for instance one that is sold by a forum member is likely to have been better cared for ) then you have a good chance of getting a goodie.

If you are looking at low miles why not consider a nice petrol V8, such a the BMW 4.4 (up to 2006) or the even better but rarer Jag 4.4 version or a supercharged 4.2?

Having owned a bmw with the TD 6 engine and having a L322 with the TDV8 , id say the v8 is head and shoulders above the straight. With my TD6 engine i had continual problems with injectors, fuel pumps and the Engine breather filter needing to be changed every 10k miles, the car constantly smoked

Just for the better gearbox the TDV8 is worth it alone . TD6 gearboxes are made of cheese and it always seems to be a matter of when it will go not If. many many threads on here of TD6 boxes failing

Yep, I agree with Dolphinboy, if you only use it at weekends get a petrol, supercharged if you like power but all the petrols seem to be less trouble than the diesels... Plus they are cheaper and tend to be lower miles....

If you plan to not drive it all week you will need to have it plugged into a smart battery charger or buy a good set of jump leads... they don't like sitting about doing nothing....  Pete

I guess if I was looking for a lot lower mileage one I'd be less concerned about making the choice

Re Dolphinboys suggestion of petrol version. In general people would say the diesel version of most cars are good for miles. Is the feeling that this isn't the case with the L322?

Edit: There seems to be a lot of 4.2 petrol (both supercharged and not) out there but very few 4.4, is there much difference in the two, and what are the potential pitfalls of the supercharged? Sounds like it would be expensive to mend if it broke

Early 4.4 is BMW M62
Later 4.4 and 4.2 S/C is Jaguar unit

No major problems with any of them, Jag units more reliable than the M62...

My ultimate would be a 4.2 S/C on LPG...  Pete

Not sure where the original post went but, from experience, the Td6 really spoils the car.

I'd buy a Supercharged if you're not doing huge miles, the 4.2 seems reliable and you'll actually be able to overtake stuff.

Do you know if 4.2 non SC exist as I can't see any at all. Presumably a failed super charger is an expensive experience!

All the 4.2's are supercharged. The 4.4 is either a BMW engine or from late 2005 the jaguar engine iirc FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
Mantec Sump Guard, Rigid Load liner, MY10 BT upgrade.

Yes, the Jaguar engines were introduced with the 2006MY facelift (along with the 6-speed ZF and different transfer box), 4.4 NA and 4.2 supercharged.

3.6 TDV8 came the following model year (along with the revised interior, electronic handbrake, Terrain Response etc.).

Having looked at fuel consumption on the petrol versions I think I Will definitely be going with the diesel.

So going back to my original starting topic it would be good to get everybody's opinion on the pluses and minuses of the TD6 versus the TDV8.

Whats wrong with 13 - 14 mpg? just dont test drive the 4.2sc and then get in the td6

If you're only doing weekend miles, then if not a no brainer, the 4.2SC - pound for pound - at least becomes an interesting prospect.

A. How much to buy similar age, mileage and spec diesel versus 4.2;

B. How much to annually service and maintain them?; and

C. What's the difference in fuel costs based on calculated mileage (likewise, road tax and annual insurance)?
