United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Java Black
Hi again.....I'm back with another question..

Folks, I know this is subjective and I don't want to offend owners of both camps but....is there a big difference between the td6 and tdv8. The reason I ask is I'm going to look at a v8 this weekend which is top of my budget however for a couple of thousand less I could pick up a really nice td6. Granted a year or two older but still a lovely thing.

I've read up on both and a lot say that although not as powerful the td6 is actually ok for doing the job.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts

Mike Thumbs Up

Mike

You are correct in saying its subjective, I have had a TD6 for 10 years and it has been a labour of love, also had a TDV8 Sport for 6 months and couldnt wait to get rid of it, horses for courses.

The TD6 does all I want, enough power, tows well and I dont think it costs more to maintain that a TDV8, however I think the TDV8 interior is better from a drivers perspective.

Also I am now on 130K with the same gearbox so not all are bad (no doubt it will now go)

Probably no help but just my tuppemce worth

Cheers Thumbs Up

EDIT; if it helps I would buy a good TD6 over a ropey TDV8, but best would be a petrol Thumbs Up

Yep - it's subjective - but there is a world of difference in their performance.

There are many who are very happy with the TD6 and it provides everything they want and need.

However Very Happy I though it was an awful car and hopelessly underpowered - the TDV8 on the other hand isn't Thumbs Up

You really need to drive them both as they are significantly different and it very much depends on your driving style - I like to overtake lorries on cross country A roads for example Whistle

Thanks chaps. I don't need it to tear my face off to be honest, ive got something else to do that in, but I suppose I want to get the best I can for my budget. Are the v8 gearboxes more reliable?

Decisions decisions!!!!!

V8's have stronger gearboxes, but can have EGR & Turbo issues - each model seems to have their own particular weakness, that whilst don't affect most, provides a common enough pattern to cause people to worry......

Indeed. I suppose that is the case with all things. My current ml suffered with 'black death' injector seal maladies (and more) and to be honest has been complete rubbish.

I guess I'm wavering a little on full budget v8 which may suffer failure or a td6 that if it does throw it's gearbox enables me to fix it without having my ear chewed off 😀

I appreciate that this is a subjective thing but a bit of fairness and balance too would be good. I find it utterly mad to suggest that the tdv6 is hopelessly underpowered and incapable of overtaking a lorry on a cross country A road. Sorry but I have driven both and probably don't drive like you do but find the tdv6 superb. Rolling Eyes

I think the tdV6 is different again. I had a jaguar with that engine and was impressed but the BMW derived inline 6 is a bit older and I've never had one...

I'm in the hands of the experts so appreciate the views 👍

The TD6 is a perfectly acceptible power plant unless mine has some kind of hidden turbo, as per my previous mail, its horses for courses, drive them both then decide Thumbs Up

Hi, had my td6 18 months now. I'm very happy with it's performance although it has been chipped.
I'm on the car's 3rd gearbox, at 140k don't know if the chipping has had a bearing on the gearbox failure, but on the whole I still smile when I drive it. Very easy to service and spares easy to find.
as above they all seem to have their own quirks.
Good luck with whatever you choose. Thumbs Up

The TDV6 is a completely different beast than the TD6 Thumbs Up

I agree that the TDV6 is perfectly adequate

Horses for courses - but I found the TD6 very underpowered for my driving style, so I bought a 4.4 petrol - then a few years later went for a TDV8 which I thought was better than the 4.4 petrol - all just my opinion of course..... Whistle

The TD6 is a tractor, just type in the search box here and you'll find at least 237 post saying so Shocked

Censored . The TD6 is a very capable vehicle, but like any FFRR they need to be looked after and a full service record is a must. Gearboxes can be a problem but so can the V8 gearbox. Buy it, drive it, service it, enjoy it, repair it, lavish it with plenty money on new parts but don't let it know your drive to wherever is an emergency because they play tricks on you and like sitting at the side of the road for a few hours when needed Laughing Laughing
