My previous l405 was 'OK' but the new one, which recently had the software update for the auto lights is excellent...

There are two cameras which LR use on the L405/L494.

The black 'chunky' sensor which fixes to the bottom of the rear view mirror is the same as used in the L322.

If you have LDW, you get an upgraded camera which is fixed to the windscreen itself.

I have the lower spec one on my L494 and the upgraded one on my L405. The L405 one is significantly more responsive. The L494 one is the same as my L322 and has mixed performance to be honest.

They are still behind the likes of the German manufacturers who use better cameras - these are present on the Disco Sport and Evoque - you can tell as they have triangle shape cameras at the top of the screen.

The ones which are really good are those with LED lights as they adjust the beam pattern.

HBA I keep trying to love it but spend most of the time with it switched off.

I rented an E class a couple of weeks ago. It was better than the Rangie but still bloody awful. The blanking out certain areas was cool but not perfect. The worst thing was that it wouldn't give me full beam instantly. More "Let me see, you would like full beam, Sir? Please allow me to check that there are no reasons why you cannot have full beam. No, it would seem that this very dark twisty country road has no obvious impediment to me giving you full beam, Sir. So please allow me. Here it is".
Meanwhile I'd slowed to a crawl so I could see where I was going. If I'd had the time to work out how, I'd have disabled it.

I don't think it works below 25kph.
When I turn into my drive (and it's pitch black without street lamps etc) the main beam dips and goes to normal

It was still working (I was more like 40mph). It was just so slooooooow.

At least the Rangie is quicker to give you the full monty.

Yes there is a minimum speed for HBA to activate main beams, same as my previous C-class Mercedes main beam assist.

I had Craig @ Cam-Tech upgrade my FFRR to have HBA (replace mirror and CCF activation - great service from Craig & Lorna) and must admit I've been very happy with it so far. My early view is its as good as the Mercedes system which I loved and used all the time. I've got HBA activated all the time right now and it seems very well behaved.

Would I pay the full original retail for VAS? Not sure, but the HBA upgrade is great as far as I'm concerned

On my sport it works fine, it blinds all on coming traffic and goes off when they have passed.

I'm happy with mine, I find it better than the one on my previous ML. The only annoying aspect is that it turns on even with the fog lights on. 2016 RR ATB (Kaikoura Stone w/Brogue/Ivory-Brogue)
