Buy a nearly new - or wait for FaceLift?

So we want to add a RR to the fleet to replace our ageing Disco 4 (which we've owned since new).

I have been offered a nice spec late 14 Autobiography for low 80's - but I have also been offered 5% off a brand new car built to my spec. (My spec comes out to £106k or so - so we are looking at £100k all in)

The fact that the dealers seem to be having some unsold new car stock lying around, combined with the sudden appearance of chunky discounts, with short lead times on build dates, has led me to believe that all might not be going so well in the order book department???

That means two things might happen - either, the hitherto exceedingly strong, used prices will collapse imminently (usually 5 minutes after I have bought something!) ...or the FaceLift will be rushed out to stimulate demand?......or BOTH!

So I think the WRONG thing to do is order the new car right now...as it will become "one of the last" of the "old" versions........and I therefore think that I should either hang around a bit, maybe until the New Year and see if used prices soften further (they've definitely softened even in the last two weeks) - and buy a used car then, that someone else has taken the big hit on, maybe in the mid 70's for a year old 4.4 Autobiog?.......or I sit on the Disco 4 for another summer - and plan on getting one of the first Facelifts in , I'm GUESSING - September /October for the 2017 model year?

Appreciate anyones thoughts on this?...as its a tricky conundrum!

There are 64 plate circa 15K mile 4.4 AB's on the LR site now for around £75K but they are standard cars and without a part ex would be taken a little further down. In three years time I'd guess that there would be nowhere near £25K + between these cars and your factory spec car.

Going for a 12-18 month old car takes away some of your concerns regarding softening prices or a face-lift but no one can every be sure. It's a bit like playing the stocking market; I got a sure-fire tip three weeks ago that looks like a dog now but Hey Ho!

For what it's worth, this time last year I was still the owner of a Disco 4 HSE Lux and I loved it and if the new one was on the horizon then I may have waited but I didn't and bought an AB and noticed a considerable difference. They are both great cars, it's just that the full fat is just that bit more polished.....everywhere! And yesterday I bought another Thumbs Up

5% is hardly a chunky discount when you see what's available on the German stuff. Demand is bound to have tailed off a bit now.

If a facelift is that close it's unusual for there not to have been any camouflaged pictures on the net yet. Maybe the changes will be limited to just the infotainment and other bits and pieces of engineering rather than changes to the exterior (bumpers, lights etc.). There are some pictures of facelift Sports with new bumpers though.

I'm really not sure what's happening - but all of a sudden prices seem to be markedly softening - and dealers (including a large LR group who are notoriously difficult to deal with, and have a "fixed price" policy) are suddenly very keen to do a deal........so either there are a lot of cars sitting in stock , with more coming in.....or dealers ARE aware of an impending FaceLift and they want out of all the cars then can before it becomes public knowledge??

Even if the facelift comes around in three months time, which I'm not sure it will, I'd expect very subtle if any exterior changes. Hopefully some more buttons that just do the one thing you want, an improved media experience and some ramping up of the power a little. But if you are really concerned either hold back or buy a well priced used one and at least you'll be shielded from the major pain.

Personally, I think this is just the way things generally happen with good new models. At 12 month old from new, you can sell them and almost buy another for the price you paid, such is supply and demand but a three year plus run car is different. They lose money so a big consideration is buying it at the right price in the first place. Thumbs Up
