Hi guys looking to change my sport Autobiography next year and i cannot decide between these two.
Any advice will be much appreciated.
I do see some on here have had both would be keen to hear there thoughts. tia.

Never owned either but have driven both and friends own both. It depends what you'd like out of the car really because the L405 is no sports car. In my own limited experience both are great motors but the SC extremely quick in a straight line and is almost linear up to fairly big speeds but the with either you wouldn't want to be taking all of that speed into a bend.

I've just changed my 3.0tdv6 AB for another 3.0tdv6. I thought that I was going to buy the 4.4 until I really thought about what I needed from the car and for me whilst the SDV8 is very impressive, and it really is the power of the 3.0 is just fine for me but it's much smoother and a fair bit more refined, which seems mad but certainly in my case is true.

If I was in the market for what you are talking about and could live with 18-20mpg average then it'd be the SC because it's brutish, refined and has a wonderful soundtrack

I vacillated on this very issue for a long time before buying the 4.4SDV8 L405. As I have begun to think about the ideal spec on my next one, the internal debate has begun again. I did go from a 4.2SC to a 4.4TDV8 L322.

The 5.0SC is fabulous but I have another 500bhp+ car for hooning. I don't need another. The Rangie isn't the right car to hoon in anyway. I have no idea why I or anyone else would need what the 5.0SC can deliver. But I rather want one.

The 4.4SDV8 is very quiet (for a diesel) and very refined (for a diesel). Its torquey power delivery probably suits the car more than the 5.0SC. It is clearly the rational choice.

But... Every now and again, there is a hint of diesel noise and I wish I'd bought the petrol. You have to use the unpleasant diesel pump to fill it (unless you want to make an expensive mistake, Dixy). The 4.4SDV8 is the rational choice but it isn't sexy.

However... Whilst I'm not sure I care about the cost of filling it up I certainly care about the amount of time you waste doing it. Other cars come and other cars go whilst you fill a Rangie. They take forever to fuel. I can get 600 miles out of a brimmed tank. You probably will get half that out of a 5.0SC. The feeling of smug superiority knowing that I will only freeze my arse off in a petrol station half as often is rather nice. The knowledge that I can fill the car, drive to the far North and still have enough range to get me back is very comforting. Finally, one is doing a little (admittedly very little) for the environment. The fuel consumption of the 5.0SC is actually rather offensive in today's environment.

Eventually, it was this argument that sealed it for me. They are also easier to resell. I will keep a look out for a cheeky overspecced 5.0SC going for a song the next time I change... But I will probably end up in another 4.4SDV8.

Thanks for your replys guys. Emperor i am sure i will be like you and think about it and change my mind many times before i decide. I have a diesel now and have always had the diesels so i was thinking to go for the SC this time but i see there are far more 4.4s around and very few SCs so was thinking that it must suit the car well and so it seems as you think the same Emperor.
Keep the thoughts coming i need to be convinced.

I had two TDV8 Range Rovers and two Supercharged both in L322 and L405. I wouldn't go back to Diesel that's for sure. It is not about speed but mostly about refinement, no turbo lag whatsoever, fuel consumption has really improved on the L405 SC compared to my previous L322 5.0SC. Pretty reasonable at 22 MPG on my last weekend trip, of course if you give it the beans it will take a lot more fuel but as Emperor Mong said, it is not a car you drive with the throttle pedal to the floor.
I don't think I'm stopping much more for fuel than with my Diesel engined Range Rovers and even if I were, it wouldn't bother me as I do have to pee from time to time.
The environment argument doesn't stand as everybody knows a Diesel engined car pollutes way more than a petrol engined one, they are talking of banning Diesel powered cars from city centres in France.
You are buying the best luxury 4X4, why would a marginal increase in fuel consumption bother you? It's a bit like building a swimming pool and saving money by half-filling it. It makes no sense. Buy the 5.0 Supercharged, it is the better car.

Actually, the latest models will make the decision slightly different. I believe that the 4.4SDV8 will have a smaller fuel tank to give room for an AdBlue tank in order to make the emissions more polar bear friendly. More eco-envionmental but less range for the diesel. Ho hum...

I have been pondering this also - as we are about to buy one. I like the sound of the SC's power and exhaust tone.....but I can live without the consumption as I hate filling up - and even though I won't be driving the car as much as the wife - its me who seems to put he majority of the fuel in...hence a long range is a massive bonus.

I think if I was contemplating the SC I would probably have my head turned by a G-Wagen and end up with a G63?

Having had 6 petrol's, I took a lot of convincing to change, I had a 322 4.4 tdv8 and did 75000 blissful miles in it, and 1 mile that his imperial majesty kindly wont let me forget.
As I have only done 400 miles in the new one I can not truly comment but there was no doubt about having a diesel. I really cant see why anyone would want a car of this size and mass to be any quicker. I never achieve the sort of figures you guys talk about but I do have a heavy right foot. letters not necessarily in the right order

The only real sticking point to the SDV8 is the fact that the TDV6 is quieter and more refined (but on the other hand, the SDV8 is quicker and has Active Roll Control).

Since your other car is a V12 Vantage, I can only assume you are a petrolhead so your only choice is a 5.0 Supercharged.
