2005 Range Rover Vogue SE Td6 Adriatic Blue

replaced the torque converter

torque converter started vibrating slipping and snatching ,so ordered a recon of ebay on thurs afternoon took it to my mates garage stripped it and managed to get the box back in by 5 oclock with just a couple of bolts ,finished it friday,totally different to drive alot smoother,having red up on recon torque converters ,rang a guy named doug ,he knows his stuff ,recons them with uprated kevler plates and give 2 years warrenty.

Don't suppose you took lots of useful photos of the strip down and rebuild for others to follow? .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember

Probably worth pointing out that the torque converter lock-up clutches for the TD6 and the V8 models are completely different. The TD6 GM unit is similar to a manual gearbox clutch friction plate assembly with a sprung centre for torsional vibration absorption, so is relatively straightforward to remove and replace.

On the other hand, repair of the LUC used in the ZF Sachs converter from early petrol models is a highly specialised task where the reaction plate for the piston springs – which double as tangential driving straps - has to be re-welded back into position very accurately (it’s friction welded at the factory) because the total piston movement is only around 1mm.

The friction plate is a separate item.

For this reason many TC repair shops will not touch the ZF unit.

no photos as i was in hospital when it was being done the torque converter was brought of ebay of a bloke called doug he is bmwe39man,his number is 07802504000

Hi All

My gearbox was fully rebuilt with all Sonnax mods done. But the local TC rebuilds in SA are questionable at the very best for the GM 5L40E boxes. So the TC failed within 3 months.

I have now elected to fit a new TC from BMWE39Man (Doug).

What a difference to drive that vehicle now. Well done Doug will give your name to all requesting advise on 5L40E rebuilds.

Doug's TC's use a Kevlar lining in the TC lockup clutch and have other strengthened mods done to them. And they come with a 2 year warranty.
