BMW M62 4.4 engine on petrol and LPG Coolant pressue problem

Hi,

Just want to share some observations and to see if anyone else has had similar problems.
I bought the 53 reg fatty in may 2014. Since then i've had a few coolant related issues.
She blew the top rad hose off whilst in crawling traffic, the metal ring holding the hose to the body let go.
then the expansion tank split on the bottom whilst we were on the motorway
the rad was replaced due to the usual leak on the bottom corner
earlier this month, the expansion tank split along the side dumping all the coolant.

this has prompted me to take a closer look at the system. I've googled this and it seems common but nothing indicating a solution.

Couple of points

1. Have you the 140psi cap fitted or 200psi (they changed the early ones down from 200 to 140 (yellow underside cap)

2. You can fit an 80 deg thermostat (as opposed to standard 110deg - see @Haylands Project Fatty Offroader post and my post here http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic6052-3090.html. No problem with emissions / MOT for this mod. Kit available on Ebay.

Common leak areas ...

1. Remove fan cowling and if you have orignal Behr rad, you will no doubt see leaking seams on the rad, particularly on LHS (when looking from front of car)

2. The small stubby heater manifold hose at rear of engine (below pcv) - looks like this onse below - about £10 part JHC000081



That lot will do you for starters ... then there is the valley pan gasket ... they do like a good leak and trouble is that often only when engine is running and because it runs hot, often the only trace is residue where the steam has burnt off leaving trace of coolant colour Howard

Pressure volume and temp all interlink. Is my personal opinion that one of the best mod you can do to the 4.4 is to lower the thermostat temp, which can be done by a straight swap part. a direct result is lower pressure in the system as well. I'll dig out the link to the part. V8 or else ...

A good tip also DONT over fill the expansion bottle!
Dont even fully fill it by the indicator.
Halfway or just under half way for the fill, there is too much heat and pressure in these cooling systems.

Many thanks for the replies chaps.
So far, i've changed the tank cap to a genuine 140psi version, i've lowered the amount of coolant in the system so the 'level' is around min. I've got me a genuine expansion tank to go on and i'll see about ordering the 88 degree version stat.
I'll see about getting the hoses sorted and getting it checked to make sure i've not got a HG problem.

I looked at fisha's thermostat and it's great if you want to keep it standard, but I could only find one that was three times the price of this which gives you the option to fit just about any temp stat you want, you do need to do a bit of metalwork to make it fit though....

Coolant cap

Hi recently fitted the 80 c thermostat cap to my 4.4, still have the 200 coolant cap fitted , can anyone advise if they have had issues with the 140 cap. Been on other forums and owners seem to suggest problems with the140 cap, mainly leaks on the 4.4. Also any one have the part number, for this item. Also what does the 200 or 140 denote ? PSI, Llb sq inch, Kpa !.

KPA, not PSI, if it was 200 PSI and it exploded I wouldnt want to be near it.
I run a 140 and its been fine.

Mine had a 200kPa cap until a few days after I bought it and when it went in for a trans cooler replacement. The mechanic changed it to a 140kPa unit.

I did notice it when I got the car and thought "That's bloody high!" Ron B. VK2OTC

With many reports of radiator, hose and expansion tank failures there are no reports of the 140Kpa caps lifting and releasing excess pressure.
Makes one think all the failures are excess heat related.
Yes 200Kpa is very high, this is getting on towards 30Psi, another Land Rover oversight?

Not over sight, design choice to increase the running temp of the engine as a means to reduce emissions.... At the expense of spare capacity for overtemp/pressure. V8 or else ...

I have had what I would call high pressure operation with my cooling system.
In 3 years I have replaced the expansion bottle 2 times due to very fine leakage from the seem facing the wheel arch on the expansion bottle.
Today I have replaced the bottle again and installed a new thermostat.
The SG of the coolant seems to suggest 55-60% mix, I hight tinker with this and get it closer to 50% as there seem to be issues with fluid flow and the thermal properties of the coolant above 50%.
Looking at the original thermostat I believe it could have been binding on the wax plug, its pretty hard to tell.
We have a few hot days coming up in Sydney a 100km run will give me an idea os to weather the stat was bung.
Interesting that the cap has never released any fluid even though I use a 140KPa one.

Has anyone else had issues with bottle leakage (multiple failures)

With the temps you have out there you really should get one of these with an 80deg stat... they run so much nicer at the lower temp, it really is a win win situation... the engine and all the ancillaries will last much longer... Everything under your bonnet was fine when it was new but after a few years they deteriorate quickly when you get excessive heat under there...

May i just add that I just discarded the thermostat altogether 4 years ago( just kept the housing ) , after a i blowed a top rad hose .

I have never add any overheating since ......

Yes i do live in an area that does not suffer from low temps in Winter ;;;; it may help .

and the engine just runs fine .... Jaybear
