its been frustrating sitting in the back ground and not 'contributing' to this thread but i feel i need to add my opinion..

franks argument with criag is that he asked for and needs 'winter' tyres because he will be fined and jailed if he hasnt got them on his L405...

the german law which changed in november 2010 states that winter tyres must be fitted from october to easter ..it also specifies what a winter tyre is and it accepts that all-year or all-weather M&S tyres are permissible as long as the tyre has a M&S logo..
the law also states that M&S tyres do not have to be 'winter' tyres...

craig sent frank M&S tyres so i cant see why frank is stirring things up....i can only conclude that frank has been told the wrong info regarding the german tyre law...

a couple of links re the german tyre law,

Did not want to post either Stan but your incorrect:

(4) - Germany introduced regulations in 2010 requiring all passenger cars and motorbikes including vehicles from foreign countries to be fitted with winter tyres or all season tyres on all axles when conditions are wintry. Winter tyres (or 'all season' tyres) should bear the mark M+S* or the snowflake symbol on the side wall.

*Check with the tyre supplier if you are in any doubt as some 'M+S' tyres sold in the UK are summer tyres. These would not meet the requirements even though the sidewall marking, ‘M+S’, might suggest that they do.

Just run into this post and I am flabbergasted and disgusted.
Stan and Martin I do admire your way of dealing with this.
I bought my two last range rovers in the UK on pictures only
One through this forum.
Offcourse there is always something to complain about if you're to lazy to fly over and have a look (like I am)
But then you solve it like gentlemen and if not you take your loss and learn!
I find the tone hardening in several posts on here. Some OP's think that being anonymous gives them the right to behave uneducated or rude.
This forum is a great place to spend some minutes daily, but please gentlemen, act like grown up gentlemen.
Life is to short for this kind of behaviour.

I think everyone is learning on this thread - Gary, in your last post on Winter tyres, you weren't quite as clear Whistle

I guess it's all down to what Continental say as to who is in the wrong....

Looking at the tread, I'd be surprised if Contis were considered Summer rather than 'All Weather' (not sure if that's the same as All Season

Regular Conti's on the left & winters on the right - the zig zag sipes in the regular tyres certainly make them look all weather.....

Oh Dear wrong again guys AUSTRIA had different Legal Requirements to GERMANY

Ze are different countries with different rules.

THIS QUOTE IS CORRECT FOR AUSTRIA: (Apology?)

Gazellio @ Prestige Cars wrote:
In Austria, from 1 November-15 April, all vehicles up to 3.5t may only be driven in ice and snow ‘wintry conditions’ if winter tyres are fitted to all four wheels.

Snow chains fitted to at least the two driven wheels are an alternative if the road is covered with ice or snow.

Trucks 3.5t+ must have winter tyres fitted to drive axles during this period whatever the conditions (up to 15 March for ‘omnibuses’) and carry snow chains.

By law, a winter tyre is only one marked M&S, MS or M+S. There’s no mention of the Three Peak snowflake symbol. However, ‘All-Weather’ tyres marked M and S are acceptable.

The regular fine is €35 but can be as high as €5,000, and your car confiscated, if the case goes to court. Read the full requirements here. https://www.help.gv.at/Portal.Node/hlpd/pu...31001.html

@gary , as i see it the snow flake can or can not be on the side of the tyre,

extract from one of my links,

The new law also spells out what a “winter tire” is. Specifically, it is an M+S-Reifen, a mud-and-snow tire that has an official M+S (Matsch und Schnee) marking on it.

(M+S tires do not have to be “winter” tires. All-year or all-weather M+S tires also qualify.)

The German automobile club ADAC recommends going a step further and getting tires with the “three-peak-mountain” seal, an indication of snow tires that meet the highest standards.

But the AA web site you quoted for GERMANY has the same little asterisk for AUSTRIA Whistle

Quote:
(1) - All vehicles driving on snow covered roads must have winter tyres (or all-season tyres marked M+S*/mud and snow) during the winter season (from 1 November to 15 April) and if roads have a covering of snow, slush or ice outside these dates. Tyres must have a minimum tread depth of 4mm.

So whilst the dates are different - the rest of the guidance is the same......

It seems to be a very confusing area with lots of conflicting advice Big Cry

Yes Stan but the German police will give you a ticket if the tyre is not Winter (sypes etc) even if it has an M&S Marking.

*Check with the tyre supplier if you are in any doubt as some 'M+S' tyres sold in the UK are summer tyres. These would not meet the requirements even though the sidewall marking, ‘M+S’, might suggest that they do.

THats it for me I have no argument with anybody but I like the facts.

the asterix/snowflake? on this AA statement is mis-leading,

Winter tyres (or 'all season' tyres) should bear the mark M+S* or the snowflake symbol on the side wall.

why say it must be a M&S * or a snowflake.. ... - .- -.

OK missed that so my Argument for Germany applies in Austria THEY NEED TO BE WINTER TYRES not summer tyres with M&S. Thumbs Up
