*Check with the tyre supplier if you are in any doubt as some 'M+S' tyres sold in the UK are summer tyres. These would not meet the requirements even though the sidewall marking, ‘M+S’, might suggest that they do.

SEE ABOVE: The German police are well aware of what a Winter Tyre (Sypes etc) is if its a summer with M&S you will get a ticket.

so reading this statement, i would say that all-year or all-weather would include summer tyres

(M+S tires do not have to be “winter” tires. All-year or all-weather M+S tires also qualify.)

police will only look at the M&S symbol, they are not tyre experts that can work out what type the tyre compound is...

and btw using large fonts is a bit childish... ... - .- -.

So an All Season Tyre with M+S markings - so legal in Germany ?

I'm still a big winter tyre fan - and have proper Winter Contis fitted - so I'm not arguing that they aren't better - just trying to be clear on whether they are illegal - I don't know about anyone else, but I'm learning here Thumbs Up

No Stan your childish and also a Moderator. Shocked

Why would the AA put the * and note if not relevant:

*Check with the tyre supplier if you are in any doubt as some 'M+S' tyres sold in the UK are summer tyres. These would not meet the requirements even though the sidewall marking, ‘M+S’, might suggest that they do.

Say what you like you WILL NEVER agree with anything I say. Good bye Mr Unbiased Moderator Very Happy

I think the critical point is SOME - not ALL

The Conti's are All Season and have M+S markings so are legal - maybe not preferable / the best - but legal none the less

I didn't know that before so feel I've learnt something today Thumbs Up

I think you're both saying the same thing - Summer M+S tyres are not OK - but All Season M+S tyres are OK

The Conti's are All Season M+S - therefore OK

The AA web site just says to check that they are not Summer M+S

Oh my ...... what a terrible thread ...

I won't comment on the merits of the particular case ....

BUT I will comment on my personal experiences with Craig;

I've used Craig for years to look after my cars - Range Rovers and none Range Rovers, I've bought cars from him also.

He and Lorna are as straight as they come ...

Always willing to go above and beyond, provide expert advice and time.

I've referred many people to them and all have had similar experiences. Stephen Gazard

Legal - yes what Frank wanted - no

All I can add is that I have Winter Contis fitted

I posted when I fitted them that it may not have been worth it - feel even more so now.....

I think this thread highlights that EVERYONE was unclear about the difference and specific tyre requirements / laws - and hindsight is a wonderful thing Whistle

I think we can agree it is complicated and there is room for misunderstanding, how that is resolved is best done in private. I have often wondered why some forums are so pedantic in not allowing discussions like this, I at least now understand that. letters not necessarily in the right order

Winter tyre markings

Winter tyre markings explained: M+S
M+S symbol
The "M + S" symbol on a tyre sidewall denotes the tyre has performance capabilities for mud and snow conditions. For snow, this means a tyre's tread pattern, tread compound or structure are designed to achieve performance, better than a normal tyre, with regard to its ability to initiate or maintain vehicle motion in snow.

Winter tyre markings explained: Alpine
Alpine symbol
The "Alpine" symbol identifies winter tyres according to UNECE regulations (valid in the EU and various other countries) and the tyre regulations of the USA and Canada.

The snow performance of these winter tyres has to be proven by objective tests and meet or exceed defined limits. These tyres provide high performance with regards to safety and control on snow, on icy road and in general at deep temperatures.

Special case 4x4/SUV tyres
Many SUVs and off-road-vehicles are equipped with tyres carrying the "M+S“ symbol on the sidewall. The reason for this is the vehicle category was first offered in North America where all-season tyres with the "M+S“ symbol are customary. Within the tyre portfolio of Continental this applies, for example, to the product lines ContiCrossContact LX, ContiCrossContact LX Sport or Conti4x4Contact.
The "M+S" marking is officially defined in an EU directive as meaning: “a tyre with a tread pattern and structure designed to better performance in snow than that of a normal tyre”. The performance of “M+S” marked tyres is therefore neither defined nor measured.

The snow performance of winter tyres is specified in North America with the so-called "Alpine" symbol. Only tyres which meet or exceed these requirements may carry the "Alpine" symbol.

Continental recommendation
Even though "M+S" marked tyres are required by law during winter in some European countries, Continental recommends to use winter tyres with the "Alpine" symbol on the sidewall and a tread depth of at least 4 mm in wintry conditions.

Continental with M&S Marking: Legal in Germany they may be but safe in German Heavy Winter conditions they are not. Neutral
