but if you defo need winter tyres and they are only for a month or so and you have a limited budget then surely a cheap set will suffice....

now if you are able to afford, as you say 'the best' because you have a chalet in the alps then agreed , a set a decent branded on a spare set of wheels is the way to go.. ... - .- -.

It depends on why you 'need' them.

There are loads of comparisons out there - but the performance of each tyre differs in dry / wet / snow / ice and at different temperatures - but don't assume a winter tyre is automatically better than a summer tyre....

This review is a few years old, but there are other similar ones - some cheap winters may be good in snow, but are hopeless on a wet road.

I was in a hurry with previous replies and they are also aimed at the many folk viewing this thread .
The review link to the gripmax tyre only had a review for the ht version and had only covered 300km which is not enough driving to scrub the mold release agent from the tyres which makes them slip a lot .

In any case the cheap unknown tyres are best avoided especially with winter tyres . Many reviewers instantly regret purchasing cheap tyres . I realise the OP wants to save cash but should always buy wisely . The vredestiens will be adequate .

Here is a link to proper testing with comments BUT they are slightly biased German testers . Their reviews on Avon tyres are especially unfair .

Some of the cheap tyres may not be of uniform dimensions or could be out of round all of which can mess up a four wheel drive system .

I have been using 17" Pirelli Scorpion Winter Tyres in my Jeep Grand Cherokee last few seasons and they were great. I have just put a set of 20" Winter Scorpions in my L322, we will see how this will work. 07 3.6 TDV8 Vogue

Exactly my point Stan - I agree with your earlier post - a FFRR in most parts of the UK is fine on regular tyres.

If you want the best possible grip levels, then buy a decent set of winter tyres.

I'm just not convinced that a cheap set of winter tyres makes any sense

Alistair when I bought my Rangie back in October 2010 Stratstones in Perth (now Pentland) had winter Tyfoon tyres on display in the showroom and were plugging them to me big time fortunately I didn't take them up on it but I bet plenty did based on the assumption that because a main dealer recommended them then they must be good Shocked Shocked They're just Chinese crap that should never be fitted to a heavy SUV The forums premier drug dealer and human trafficking consultant

Your only contact with the road is through the tyres. It makes sense to get the best you can.

Within reason. But if the most you could afford limits you to a cheaper brand I think it's a perfectly valid question to debate whether getting a cheap brand winter would be worth it over running a normal decent summer.

For all the talk of premium, for normal to moderate driving I've long been of the impression that £250 top brand tyr does not give twice the performance of a medium brand £125 one. In fact, of the times I've had top brand brand tyres, ive more often been disappointed with ones at £200+ to replace mainly due to poor wear rate and wet performance and happier with mid price ones which performed better in those aspects.

At the moment what is frustrating me is that wet performance ratings are not distinguished between warm wet and cold wet. So a lot of winters show as poor wet performance cause they were tested at 20+ degC, but in reality they are better at the lower temps.

On the freelander I had kumho kc15 winters, and I plan on getting them again for the RR. They aren't available in your size, but I really considered them to perform much better than summers on the wet winters of west Scotland, and their price was better than other makes. V8 or else ...

I had Vredestein Wintrac 4 Xtreme on the last FFRR I had & in the heavy snow we had that year - a few years ago - they were superb as a result I have bought the same again for the L405.

I put winters on my daughters mini for the last two years & again just swopped over after she had an accident going to work on an icy road a few years ago - to me it makes it so much safer for her - you would not believe the difference it makes on an icy road - she has to travel in the cotswolds where roads are not brilliantly salted in the winter months.

As you can see I'm a convert to winter tyres & to be honest if you can afford the initial outlay, you summer tyres will last longer Thumbs Up Paul

I'm looking for a set of tyres for my classic......... Yes, it's back on the road.. 30 months under cover, new fuel, battery, check fluids starts first time and straight through an MOT..... Happy days so far....

Goodyear Wrangles are £55 each from Black circles but I saw these 'Winter Tyres' and wondered if anyone has an opinion??
