Hi all,

I've got a cracked windscreen that needs to be replaced, the glass company came out and unbolted the wiper arms but couldn't remove the Part shown in my attached picture. They say they need to remove this before they can remove the scuttle panel. They tried a puller tool apparently and broke the tool so have said they can't do the screen replacement until I get it removed.

It needs to be pulled off, with a puller tool, maybe some judicious use of the two hammer method, with squirts of WD40 (other lubricants are available) as well to help break the seal, last option is heat but don't melt the plastic!

A ball joint puller should do the job .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember

Great, thanks for the quick reply. I thought that was probably the case but wanted to check before I go buy a proper puller to do the job

Strange, we had our windscreen replaced earlier this year by autoglass and they had all the correct tools to remove that part from the taper.
From memory it was a sort of ball joint puller they used.

I wasn't sure if I could give it a whack as I didn't want to damage the mechanism but I think I'll give that a go.


Paul - the insurance sent a company called auto windscreens instead, I wasn't there myself but spoke to the guy on the phone and he says he used his wiper puller tool like usual and it snapped it as its on so tight, so he told me I have to get it sorted myself before they come do the glass

Thats a poor company then!

I personally would call the Insurers tomorrow and insist it goes to a LR dealer for replacement!!!

What would they expect my 74yr old mother to do? so he told me I have to get it sorted myself before they come do the glass THAT IS 100% UNACCEPTABLE!!! and for that reason alone, the man would not be returning! What will he nause up next!!!

Would a penetrating oil work better than wd40?

Edit. Agree with Craig, they are the experts at screen replacement so should have the necessary equipment, as my dad always told me 'a bad workman always blames his tools'!

I'm with Craig, that is a fundamental part of changing a screen and will be done on most cars, if they can't get that off you don't want them doing anything else...  Pete

Be careful the acetone does not destroy the plastic or paintwork.

I have recently found PlusGas to be the answer for seized items. Good reviews on Amazon Howard

Thanks for the advice everyone, I managed to get it off with a £11 puller and some wd40 so not sure how the windscreen company found it so hard.

I'll be complaining, not sure if my insurance company will let me go elsewhere but I'll try!

A good windscreen company certainly should not be baffled by this, have they never fitted a screen to a RR before Its not like its a rare car now is it
