X5 (E53) from 2001 to 2004 have the same 3.0 Diesel engine and GM box as the RRFF Td6 and suffered from the same problems as RRFF td6.

Simples - spend what you were going to spend on an X5 on a TDV8 Fast Quiet Better 'box More economy Problem is I like BMWs - always have. The X5 is typically BMW in its feel and not a bad place to be. I tow ALOT and mostly heavy loads and the X5 simply isn't up to it. The latest version has a 3.5te towing capacity but that is something it has struggled to achieve - the FF is limited to 3.5te by law but in reality can cope with a hell of a lot more. Oh, if you get an X5 don't ever try and tow a horse box off a wet field |

Lady at the yard has bought an X5 - but I haven't seen it yet as it's been troubled with electrical gremlins ever since she bought it 2 months ago

I had an 06my 3.0d Sport in black and I had it for 5 yrs and never spent a penny on it apart from servicing and MOT's, now for a contradiction, the camber on the rear wheels will cost you a fortune in tyres as the inside of the tread will be down to the thread but the rest of the tyre will be perfect before you know it !!!

I do like the e70 got a shot in one of the 40d a while back which was an amazing machine incredibly quick and yet great mpg. Not sure if i would ever change over from my FF to the e70 but if i did it would need to be the 40d . However i wouldn't go near the older shape, the 3.0 d has the same gearbox as the td6 and fails just the same. Everyone i know thats owned one gearbox has failed between 60-80k miles. plus i just don't like the look of the old one very dated looking in my opinion. I had a X5 from Land Rover assistance while my Defender was having a new engine once (don't ask !!) (or go over to Defender2.net and you can read the whole sorrid story) It was fast, bloody fast stopped well handled well, it was very plain and boring not particularly good on fuel. I would rather have a Disco 4 or my Defender for work any day. At home it has to be a Range Rover sorry you just cant beat them. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

I changed my 4.4 Vogue for a 30d X5 M Sport 2 years ago. Nice car with pano roof and 7 seats. However, the ride is way too firm, noisy engine and it transmits any bump in the road.

Just noticed, contrary to my post above that the X5 from 2004 to 2007 uses the 6HP26 (six speed auto) on the 3.0 TD6.

Mustard...I think that over the couple of threads that you have spun up to discuss options, one thing is blindingly clear...

I am no longer fanatical about them, you are right but there's a stack of people before me who have arrived at the same conclusions. You've done your fair share of moaning about them as well, still a fan ?? |
