South Africa 2003 Range Rover HSE Td6 Zambezi Silver

Pete, come visit Namibia and I will borrow you my DIESEL !! Then you can experience a proper RR and in the terrain it was actually built for.

Thank you to all the guys that was willing to help me acquiring a head unit, since Erisin could not find Namibia. I ordered a unit from Avin (https://avinusa.com/bmw-5-series-e39-x5-e53-avant2-full-android-multimedia-navigation-system.html) and it should be here tomorrow, Friday 23rd (trust DHL can find my country).

Once its here, I will tackle the installation process. I do however have two questions. Please consider that I would prefer the best possible sound experience, since the RR does have quite a decent system:
- please explain using the old unit. Mine do sometimes die when driving on a gravel road, only to kick back to live after a few minutes (or some more gravel road). I am not to keen to keep the unit, amp or whatever infrequently dies and would be happy to abandon all this stuff, if I can retain the same sound quality;
- should I use split systems (2way crossover for rear doors and 3 ways from front doors) and amps. I am not sure how to integrate the dash-center speaker - I assume that the OEM system must be a 5.1 equivalent and the ordered unit is only a 4.1. Would I need an additional amp for the sub-woofer?

Don't like dirty smelly oil burners..... Whistle

Just fit the unit as it says here, the front centre speaker is piggy backed off two in the front door so it will work, there are separate out's for the sub-woofer...

I think you will be surprised how good the sound is, if you don't like it you can then fit amps and cross overs etc, but why bother wasting money first...

Personally I'd get rid of the original system altogether it's just not reliable enough now it's a few years old.... Pete

Jbur, what system do you have at the mo, I recently fitted an Android unit to my TD6 with the Mid unit and factory amp. I have the system running perfectly through the factory amp and re sighted the original mid unit to allow adjustment of the trip computer and cloc

wayneg, I would be interested to know how you have done it. I will post a picture soon (from my phone) of my current unit. I am in between phones and the current one has not been configured for my PC yet.

Pete, I agree with you and thank you for returning logical thinking. I will install it and if I am not satisfied, start throwing money at it.

Interestingly, in my TD6, the seating arrangement is such that I am in front of the exhaust. Haven't yet experienced the " dirty oil burning smell" you refer to. Very Happy Very Happy
Only joking. My TD6 is my off-road car and for that purpose the low torque of the diesel works just fine. (Land Cruiser pick-up for the really serious trips). I have a new V8 Autobiography as well and what an awesome engine (and car)

Apologies for a double dose of the same picture (I'm new to this).

After seeing all the clean boot areas on this forum, I was a bit reluctant to show my dirty insides Embarassed , but I do live in a desert

Jbur, from your pictures I presume yours is a Vogue with Sat nav screen? Mine is the HSE with the Mid unit and dsp amp so not the same. The install instructions already well documented for the Vogue set-up will be your guide 2007 TDV8 VSE

Wayneg, I am sure there is a spec naming difference between the UK and South Africa models. I am not sure what I have - even the service portfolio refers only to TD6 (all I know is that it is silver, and diesel). Trim finish is definitely not the fancy wood finish spec.

Pete has an awesome "manual" for fitting the new Android unit as well as the wiring diagram (which I will use). He however discarded the head unit and from your post, I assumed that you still use it and was interested in how you did it.

I posted some pics at the end of this long thread, if you have the unit which is now in my glovebox maybe I can help but I believe you have the top spec system so cannot help with that...http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic27033.html 2007 TDV8 VSE

Thank you Wayneg. Please tell me about the performance chip, or is there a forum for it?

Trouble with keeping the old unit is you are still relying on the old system which is well known to be temperamental to say the least... rip the lot out and get rid, stick the new one in and away you go...

MPG and range still show on the bottom of the dash....

You live in a desert so may as well rip the FBH out as well....!!!! Pete

probaly no fear of drowning it in water in the desert ,so you never know pete, it might just last for ever Whistle

not everyone wants to or is capable of of ripping the lot out and replacing it with aftermarket stuff ,so do what works for you

when there is a work-round to keep the DSP on, the screen will be removed from my glovebox within minutes Thumbs Up
