I agree - it is a problem that I have been thinking about for some time.

I am sure we shall have discussions on it at a later date.

Germany 2017 Range Rover Vogue SDV8 Carpathian Grey

Dear gentlemen, normalywise the thread must be named: NO clicking behind the dash. I had this problem often here in the last three month, common is this: RR comes on a trailer (fuse 18 trick has no function after some months!) unfortune with steering to one side, difficult to pick up on trailer!, other car drives back, I dismount the whole column, repair the ECU and the solenoid, fix all back, and fully function guarentee for one year, car can drive home now on own wheels ,-))

United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Vogue SE Supercharged Atacama Sand

Hi Guys ,
I have much the same problem with my vehicle at present , I did drill the column and lubricate with WD 40 to no avail , have been looking at used columns online but haven't taken the plunge yet , have also thought about removing the solenoid and trying to clean/repair , way I see it I've nothing to lose now anyway as the column is already u/s. Price of a new column from dealer was £2800.

United Kingdom 2003 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 Adriatic Blue

digging up a older thread, (and very helpful thread might i add)

I had this issue couple times in morning recently, turning key on and off few times got the car going again luck more then anything.

Seems my battery is going below the limit as voltage in the morning is quite low. near 11v mark when sitting overnight.. if i put a booster pack on the car when have the issue car starts straight up and fine for rest of the day untill leave overnight or couple days.

So first thing to check is battery, next step the fuse 18 if its to do with the steering solenoid. 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue

United States 2003 Range Rover HSE 4.4 V8 Java Black

Hi Everyone, Thanks for the great info I have read through all the posts and several other threads. I have made the Google search and this Forum my new best friend. I am now more educated than I was a week ago.

Unfortunately I am having the same problem as everyone else "My Key Wont Turn"

To give you a little background on my L322, I purchased a 2003 Range Rover HSE in may 2016 with 89,000 miles on it for $6500. It seemed like a killer price at the time since the Car was immaculate, 1 owner, garage kept, Woman owned, So I know it wasn't dove hard / off road pushed. It was a California Car so its had great conditions all its life. I now live in TN where is gets much colder in the winter than CA. Since its gotten cold I have experienced more problems with the car. This is my First Range Rover I've ever owned and are now becoming aware of the issues and problems.

My Air suspension went out at around 96,000 miles in late November, so I opted to replace the air suspension with Coil over Spring from Strut Masters (922.17 w/ shipping) Labor for installation from my local mechanic (non RR mechanic) was $270 so total was about $1200. Everything worked fine and car has been running great until last week on 12/23 when I took my car in at 100,000 miles for routine maintenance to the same mechanic that did my suspension to do an oil change, spark plug change and coolant flush. While at the shop the key issue happened and we were not able to start the car. So we pulled the Battery let it sit for 30 min or so then reconnected the battery and then it took about 5 minutes of jiggling the key off / on to get it started. once it started it died right away and then I got it started again and gave it gas so at a high idle so it wouldnt die. The mechanic said the electronic were probably needing to relearn the system since the battery was off. When it started it idled very rough and the Electronics were freaking out. After a few minuted and a short road drive everythign returned back to normal.

Since 12/23 the car has run fine with many start / stops (probably 40-50) and 400+miles on it. Then this morning 12/30 I could not get the key to turn at all. To Clarify the Key will Unlock the Steering wheel and I can hear 3 click upon inserting the key (from the steering column) but cant start the vehicle as the Ignition will only turn enough to unlock the wheel but not to the start position. I have tried removing the battery, charging the battery, removing Fuse#18 etc. Used th spare key, I even removed the steering column fuses etc.. and nothing works The key wont unlock or start the car.

From what I read it seem that the solenoid pin that sends the signal to the ignition is in the locked out position which cant be reset by fuse18 trick or battery disconnect. Does any one have any experience with the 3 click sound or know if any of the cheap fixes will work or do I need a whole new steering Column.

I am not a mechanic, But I am a CNC Machinist / Engineer and work at a machine shop so i can make any parts and have lots of tools.

Thanks for any and all help
Sincerely, Johnathan

There should only be one click as you know and this should occur as soon as you put the key in or near the ignition and this should unlock the steering. Are you getting 3 clicks from the steering column solenoid and the steering still unlocks?
The sequence is key fobs talks to transponder around the key hole, signal sent to steering column telling it to unlock, signal returned by the column to the ignition barrel telling it to allow the ignition key to turn, turn key and car starts.
There is also an immobiliser / engine communication that allows the engine to start via a code but that doesn't effect the key turning or the starter motor .

Andy / HolidayChicken,

Thanks for the response yes the steering column does unlock and I can turn the steering wheel and I hear three clicks from the steering column itself.

The motor also moves the steering column up-and-down everything seems to work fine except for being able to turn the key to start the car. I've tried the several tricks fuse 18, battery disconnect etc. nothing seems to work the car is in park and I can see the red P light.

I'm hoping to avoid spending 2000+ for new steering column.

There are quite a few fixes now, i know storey Wilson from RSW Solutions was working on one so you could have a search of that and i posted a solution i found in a magazine at the link below, post #37, i only realised my name went in as holidaychick after i registered as there is maximum name length, and there have been others that i have read, one from black box solutions about drilling a hole and lubricating the solenoid but have a look at the link below first. The main problem to google is 'L322 key won't turn' and there are many threads.

http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/6-range-r...ition.html

i have also read that some have removed the steering lock although that may not be your problem as your steering is unlocking so it could be the actual key mechanism that is not turning but the fact that you get 3 clicks says to me the solenoid is not getting to the right position
