DIY service and repairs

When I eventually find a FFRR I will want to maintain it myself .
I could spend weeks searching forums for repair info which is stressful . Some sticky diy repair threads would be useful on this forum .
Question is , where will I find a repair manual and the best diagnostic equipment .

After years of BMW ownership I got fed up waiting a week or more for a garage appointment which often left substandard work and so I acquired the dealer level technical repair manual and diagnostic equipment and life thereafter is considerably less stressful , especially when in southern europe on a holiday weekend where I could mend problems myself .
I can access the bmw online parts catalogue to find parts specific to the vehicle vin . Prices are shown . Easy to locate parts when you have the actual genuine part number especially in foreign lands where I no speaky lingo but can manage part numbers on the phone .

So can I get similar access to the ffrr equivalent or do I need to be on the phone to someone at their convenience (which is not gonna happen ). I will really need to be as independent as possible .

Help me out folks , where will I find the stuff I need

Technical repair manual
Best diagnosic equipment
Parts catalogue
Wiring diagrams
Component locations

And if anyone can list all the common faults especially the ones which could leave me stranded that would be great as I could carry some critical spares .

Best regards ,
Andra

Thank you stan .
I had a quick look at the link but the repair manual is not great or complete and the parts catalogue is not really what I had in mind .The wiring diagrams seem ok at first glance but the bmw stuff you can click on a numbered connector or component for an actual picture of same and it`s location , it even shows how to detach connectors and gives pinout numbers and what they connect to , how do I match that for a ffrr .
I would prefer the same as the dealers use .
I will get there eventually . Thumbs Up

Or alternatively you could stick to BMW Whistle

I rather think you're doing this forum a huge disservice with your opening remarks, but we'll give you the benefit of the doubt, for a wee while Thumbs Up Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

I`m an impatient sort , maybe even a bit retarded . I`m not out to offend anyone .
I see a lot of effort has gone into the wiki links so I shall take time to read through it .

Getting parts is quite easy using your VIN and Dan at Duckworths or the other suppliers or dealers. I used to get my parts from the Dutch dealer in Rotterdam who sent them to another town in Holland from where it was airfreighted to Lagos. Not one single issue with that. So needing part number catalogs is not an issue.

As for the workshop manual, for the older L322 there is the PD version that works for me and many on the forum plus the brilliant support we give each other. The latter models you can use ToPIX it will cost you but it works. There may be a complete download pdf around as well I may even have it at home I vaguely remember. Someone on here may have helped with that, I suggest to have a look around.

More important is the experience that is present here that IMHO makes even good dealers look a bit dumb. Over time the collective forum has seen a lot of interesting things and resolved them and that experience is not in the workshop manuals.

Of course I hope you don't need to use the manuals nor experience as that means you have a good one but if you do have an issue and search on here im sure that you will find a solution and help 😊

My experience is that the L322 is not particularly difficult to work on anyway. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

It's not a tricky car to work on and depending on which one you go for each has its own specific problems. There loads of info in the wikis and on a search for most common problems, nothing is extraordinarily difficult any more than it would be on a BMW things are just bigger and stuff can wear quicker as the cars are heavier.

There are several buying guides on the wiki which will point out some common things to look out for.

I use The online parts catalogue which Russian chaps have put up at LRparts.ru (microcat) then transpose the part number (often superceeded) into LRdirect.com to get an idea of price, as said alternatively PM your vin and the part you want to Dan at duckworthparts for a good deal. Just got two gas struts for the rear tailgate for £32 (we're 25 each on eBay). There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
